Choosing the Correct Core Size for Your Laminating Roll Film

When you need to purchase a new roll of laminating film for your laminator, you need to think about the roll's core size. The core is simply the the cardboard that the laminating film is wrapped around. Your laminator will need film that has a core it can accommodate. Here are the three most common core sizes:

  • 1" core. Most of the laminators used in libraries and schools are either 25” or 27” wide. These machines typically use rolls that have a 1” core. Since these laminators are easy to use, they usually won't work with rolls with larger cores.
  • 2.25" core. A lot of medium-volume laminators require rolls that have a 2.25” core. Typically, these machines are more sophisticated than school laminators and can often use thicker film and mounting boards. If you have a special adapter, you might be able to use 1” core rolls with your device.
  • 3" core. Heavy-duty and wide-format laminators need to use rolls that have a 3” core. Most specialty laminating film is only available on these thicker rolls. These types of machines can handle very long rolls of film and they're perfect for professional use.

Those are the three core sizes that are available. In order to find out which one is appropriate for your laminator, you can consult the machine's instruction manual or measure the core of the roll that's already on the device.
