Fastback 8x Tape Binding Machine by Powis Parker

The versatile Fastback 8x is the most compact and affordable binding machine that Powis makes. Its desktop footprint (13"x19.5") is small enough to fit the most cramped conditions. The Fastback 8x handles both tape binding and hardcover book binding and is a great choice for the small office/home office (SOHO). It's also suitable for companies that do not have a central copy shop, and require that each department handle its own binding. In spite of its size and price point, the Fastback 8x is a powerful machine that can produce finished binding 3.5 times faster than traditional punch-and-bind systems. It binds from 10 to 250 sheets and is perfect for short-run and occasional jobs. Use the Fastback 8x with our Lx-Strip™ binding strips, and the Halfback™ covers, as well as most other Powis covers, including the Bindercovers™. Their distinctive design is perfect for creating the ultimate in professional-looking reports. If you'd like to customize your covers with foil printing, add the Foilfast printer. It prints up to 7 foil colors in minutes.

Powis Parker Fastback 8x Tape Binding Machine Review

Overview:

The Powis Parker Fastback 8x is an adhesive tape-binding system that is designed for creating highly professional documents that are up to 12” in length.
With the Fastback 8x organizations have the ability to tape bind documents that are up to 250 pages thick. Or you can use this system to create professional quality hard bound documents.
Plus, using this machine it is possible to produce finished documents over three times faster than conventional punch and bind machines.

Features/ Strengths:

The Fasback 8x tape binding machine is incredibly simple to operate. In fact, it only has three buttons. One button controls the settings, one button is used for editing documents and the third button is used to activate the machine. Users can even save their settings so that it is possible to bind documents with the simple press of one button.
Buying supplies for this machine is extremely easy. Just two sizes of strips allow you to bind documents from a few pages up to an inch thick. This cuts down on the inventory of supplies that you will need to carry for your binding machine. Gone are the days of having to buy ten or twelve sizes of spines to bind your documents.
The Fastback 8x is an extremely versatile machine. It provides users with the ability to create tape bound soft cover documents and hardbound reports on one machine. You can also purchase strips with different colors and textures to help complement your organizations brand image. You can even use the 8x in conjunction with the Powis Parker Foilfast Printer which allows users to produce personalized foil-printed title-sheets and covers for their documents.
The 8x is small and portable. Measuring only 13” X 19.5” this machine is easy to store when not in use and can be easily transported to and from job sites.

Limitations/Weaknesses:

The Fastback 8x cannot be used to bind large or thick documents. It is limited to documents with a binding edge that is less than 12” with less than 250 sheets of paper. Organizations that need to handle larger documents may want to consider the 15xs which can bind longer and larger documents.
Unfortunately, the Fastback 8x is not very edit-friendly. Adding or removing multiple pages after the document is bound can be difficult. It works out ok for users who need to add or remove one or two pages from their books.
The machine is excellent for binding most standard paper stocks. However, it does have problems adhering to some thick and glossy paper stocks. Furthermore, full bleed full coverage printed documents sometimes may have melting issues due to the high temperatures needed to bind.

Construction:

The Fastback 8x is made primarily from plastic and is both stylish and contemporary.
It measures 13” X 19.5” and has a metal document slot and durable metal internal components.

Recommendation:

The Fastback 8x is great for a small office or home office that needs to bind up to 50 documents per week.
It is easy to use, stylish, compact and helps to provide a contemporary and professional look for your documents and reports.
This makes this machine a great choice for departments that are responsible for binding their own documents.
However, organizations that need to bind documents that are thicker than 250 sheets, longer than twelve inches or who want a greater selection of supplies may want to look at the fastback 15xs.
