Akiles WireMac M Manual Double Loop Wire Binding Machine Review

Overview:

High quality basic twin loop wire binding machine that is available for either 2:1 pitch or 3:1 pitch
Possibly the most popular 3:1 pitch twin loop wire binding machine available on the market. It is easy to use and includes a great set of features.
Metal construction makes it a durable option when compared to some of the plastic wire binding systems available on the market.

Features/ Strengths:

It has fully disengageable dies, an open throat design and a 14� long punching throat. These features combine to allow you to bind documents that are as small as a few inches in length and as long a 17� (with a 2 step punching process). You can punch and bind legal, letter and half letter sized documents using the WireMac M.
It includes a heavy duty wire closer that is easy to adjust and is solid so that it won�t slip over time. Many cheaper wire binding machines have wire closers that will close documents unevenly over time. The WireMac M won�t do this.
Includes a double handled design that makes the WireMac M more efficient and prolongs the life of the punch by separating the mechanisms for wire closing and punching.
Available in your choice of 3:1 pitch (3 holes per inch) or 2:1 pitch (2 holes per inch). The 3:1 pitch model is designed for smaller sized books that are between 3/16� and 9/16� thick. The 2:1 pitch is designed for larger books that are between 5/8� and 1-1/4� thick. Special wires are avialble for binding smaller documents using the 2:1 pitch machine. The 3:1 pitch machine can also be used with 3:1 pitch spiral coil for a different look and feel.

Limitations/Weaknesses:

Depending on the model of Wiremac that you select (the pitch) you will be limited in the sizes of books that you can bind. Companies who want to bind documents that are both thin and thick should consider upgrading to the Wiremac Duo which offers the ability to handle both 2:1 and 3:1 pitch wire.
The wire holder on the front of this machine uses a clamp style. This type of wire holder is difficult to use when compared to the hook style wire hanger included on many larger wire binding machines. This is something that you can work with and will become easier as you get used to it. The important thing to remember is to not allow your wire to become compressed or stretched when placing it in the clamp holder.
The design of this machine includes the wire closer on the back of the machine. I find that it can be difficult to move the wire from the holder in the front to the back of the machine without the pages falling out. Some larger wire binding machines place the wire closer up front for easier transportation of the wire for closing.
This machine is designed for low to mid volume users. High volume users might want to consider an option with an electric punch and a stand alone professional wire closer.

Construction:

The WireMac M is extremely well constructed. In fact it offers virtually all metal components that are built to last.
It comes with a one year warranty from Akiles. However, I seldom ever see any problems with these machines. You probably won�t end up needing the warranty.

Recommendation:

This machine is ideal for small and medium sized organizations that want to bind documents on a weekly basis. It is easy to use and extremely reliable.
Larger volume users will want to look for an electric punching mechanism and a stand alone wire closer.
Great features for your money. This is the base level machine that I recommend to most customers looking to start using twin loop wire in their organization.
