GBC CombBind C20E Plastic Comb Binding Machine Review

GBC makes some of the most popular comb binding machines on the market. Their binding machines are easy to use and are suitable for various work environments. One of GBC's newest devices is the CombBind C20E, an updated version of the C20. This is definitely a device you should check out if you're looking for a new comb binding machine. Take a look at its strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths:

  • The C20E can punch up to 20 sheets at a time which is a decent amount for a comb binding machine. This device has an vertical, electric punching mechanism which makes it easy to prepare your documents for binding. There is even a punch alignment sensor so you can properly line up your pages. (You can use letter- and A4-sized paper with this device, in addition to oversized covers.)
  • This machine can bind documents that are up to 320 pages long using combs that are up to 1.5” in diameter. The C20E has a helpful spine size guide that's color-coded. You can use it to figure out how thick your document is and then choose a comb that will accommodate all of the pages.
  • The C20E has a comb storage tray so you will have somewhere to conveniently stash your combs. It's located near the chip tray. And speaking of the chip tray, it's equipped with a sensor that will alert you when you need to dispose of your paper bits.
  • If you like to use GBC ZipBind spines, you can punch holes in your document with the C20E and then bind it by hand. If you want, you could even pre-punch a lot of paper so you can use your ZipBind spines when you're out in the field.
  • This device is well-designed and it's not overly large. It's a good choice for schools and smaller offices. It's also good for home use if you need to bind documents for your home-based business.
  • Finally, the C20E comes with a 1-year warranty.

Weaknesses:

  • Although the 320-page binding capacity is suitable for occasional use, it would have been nice if GBC has engineered the machine to work with all comb sizes. (The largest combs are 2” in diameter and can bind work that's 425 pages long.)
  • This machine doesn't have disengageable punching dies, so it will be very difficult to punch and bind documents of varying sizes. Luckily, there are plenty of machines on the market with disengageable dies, so it isn't hard to find one.
  • The C20E is really meant for occasional use, so it might not be able to handle large volumes of punching and binding.

The GBC CombBind C20E is a nice improvement over the C20, which had a manual punching mechanism instead of an electric one. This device is user-friendly and it's great for documents that are up to 320 pages long. Plus, this machine is well-designed, it can be used in conjunction with GBC ZipBind spines, and it comes with a good warranty. Remember to take the device's weaknesses into consideration so you can be sure this device is right for you. If it is, check it out today.
