Rhino Tuff OD 4100 12" Electric Spiral Coil Inserter for OD4300 Review

Overview:

  • The Rhin-O-Tuff OD4100 is a module that is designed to be used with the OD-4300 spiral coil inserter.
  • This device allows you to quickly and easily adapt your OD4300 coil inserter into a more traditional roller style inserter.
  • The OD4300 is a mandrel style inserting machine that is designed for use with 36” coil lengths. It is great for long runs but doesn’t work well for short run applications or for use with 12” cut length spiral coils.
  • This machine allows you to have the best of both worlds.

Features/ Strengths:

  • Combining the OD-4100 with the OD-4300 offers your organization a great deal of flexibility. For long runs and custom length books you can use the unique inserting system offered by the OD-4300. However, the OD-4100 give you an option for short run production with 12” standard coils. This gives your operators a choice depending on the project that they are working on and their level of training.
  • The OD-4100 is much easier than the OD-4300, especially for untrained or inexperienced users. With the OD4100 all you have to do is start the coil onto the edge of the book and then let the coil inserter spin it on the rest of the way. There are no complex adjustments that need to be made.
  • The OD4100 is incredibly simple to set up for use with your OD4300. All you need to do is set it on top of your OD4300 and tighten the knob to fasten it in place. Once you are done using it and want to switch back you simply undo the large black knob on the right side of the machine and lift it off. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
  • The OD4300 is only compatible with spiral coils up to 32mm in diameter. In theory you could use the OD4100 for use with larger sized coils. However, if you plan on using this device for large diameter books you might want to consider a spine former to help you shape the spines of your books.

Limitations/Weaknesses:

  • The OD4100 cannot be used apart from the OD4300. It is simply a set of rollers. The 4300 provides the power to move the rollers. You can separate the two machines or use them simultaneously.
  • The OD4300 is designed to be bolted onto an OD4000 or OD4300 rhino tuff binding punch. If you don’t have one of these punches you need to buy an OD3500 binding station and you can bolt it to that. This means that you actually need more than just the OD4300 and OD4100 to use this device. You also need the binding station or Rhin-O-Tuff punch that will attach to the 4300. If you don’t have all of these pieces, the 4100 won’t work.
  • Although the OD4100 says that it can be used with all pitches and diameters of spiral coil, it is difficult to use this machine with large sized coils. Binding large sized documents using an electric coil inserter requires you to shape the spine of your document to match the curve of the coil. It is also a lot easier if you use an oval hole pattern.

Recommendation:

  • If you already own an OD-4300 coil inserter, I would highly recommend this as an add on accessory. It is easier to use and adds a great deal of functionality.
  • This system gives you the choice between using 12 inch and 36 inch spiral coils.
  • However, if you do not yet own the OD4300, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this combination.
  • The OD-4300 is fairly difficult to use and requires an OD series Rhin-O-Tuff punch or the OD-3500 binding station to function. You should be able to find a high quality coil inserter for less money than all of the components that are required for use with this system.
