Out of the box you'll realize you'll have to do some assembly; just the two handles. Remove the screws from the side and place one handle, the short in the back and the long in the front. Screw the bolts right back on. Use a flat head screw driver to tighten the bolts down. All set, both levers should work, good to go. Now let's make a book.

With your project materials in order, start with the covers. Turn them face down into the throat of the puncher. This is a standard sized document but the Megabind 1 can handle lengths up to 14 inches. Using the side margin control knob on the left, be sure that all papers are punched in the same fashion. The long handle makes the punch. Do likewise with the remaining pages of your project. The Megabind 1 is capable of punching 20 sheets of 20lb paper at one time.

When all is punched, you're ready for the binding. Order your papers and select the proper size comb. To assist in this process, you'll find on the face of the machine a scale. Simply slide your whole project into the scale to see the precise size comb you'll need. Our demonstration required a ¼ inch comb. Fit the comb into the teeth on the top of the machine. In comb binding, be sure to remember to always have the teeth faced up and the project faced down; that way the booklet does not fall apart when used. Back to the levers, you use the small one to open the teeth of the comb. Place the project face down over the teeth of the comb, lining everything up. Back up with the lever and the comb closes. It's solid metal, weighs 31 pounds, and helps you both punch as well as bind with plastic combs. And it's loaded with features that make binding simpler.
One such feature is the binding guide. This allows the user to determine the correct comb size to use. Slide the whole project into the slot and read the measurement. Two features that go hand in hand are the side margin control and the die disengagement pins; both help in the consistency of punching. The side margin control allows you to lock the left margin so all your papers start in the same place. The disengagement pins allow you to determine where the punching will end, which allows for punching of papers of all sizes without partially punched holes.
As for the levers, they are strong and sturdy. The long one is used for punching holes, the small one for opening the teeth. As with all manual punchers, punch capacity depends on a few variables. The claim of punching 20 sheets of 20lb paper on a single lift may be a little inflated for most users; more like 12-15. The punching margin control knob provides the best depth margin for all comb sizes while maximizing the tear resistence of your document. And the continuous binding control knob prevents over-opening of combs, especially useful for multiple bindings of the same size document. There is minor assembly associated with the Megabind 1. The two handles need to be bolted on. You remove the bolts, you place on the handles, you screw the bolts back on, it's all set.
The Akiles Megabind 1 is an excellent choice for an organization that is looking for a highly reliable legal size plastic comb binding machine. It's built extremely well and has all the features that you would expect. For the price, the Megabind 1 is a great buy. However, for a few dollars more, the Megabind 2 works the same way but allows you to also bind with wire.
