When we turn on the machine to start, you’ll first see that the digital reading will be blank. At every start up you will have to bring the back gauge to the forward most position to reset the measurement. Do this by rotating the handle until the number shows.

The digital reading will increase and decrease as you turn the handle, so you never have to go to the back of the cutter to check your measurement. At any time, you can switch the measurement to read in inches or in millimeters. There is also a fractions conversion table to assist your measurements.

As mentioned before, turning the front handle moves the back gauge back and forth. You can see it moving here.

Now with my measurement set, use the knob on the right to lock the measurement in place. This way it doesn’t get accidentally bumped and changed.

Now insert your stack of pages. Use the block to even your pages on the side for a consistent cut.

Then turn the top wheel to close the clamp. You’ll see it firmly come down onto your pages and hold them in place.

Now close the safety shield, which will hold in place by a magnet. Push and hold the two green buttons simultaneously to activate the blade. It will stay down until released, and at the same time the safety shield will automatically open. Then remove your scraps.

Raise the clamp by spinning the top wheel and pull out your trimmed up project!

Now, if the blade does not cut a page or two on the bottom, take this red tool in the back. With this tool you can raise and lower the blade in very small increments to adjust for this.

Using the other tool we can also swap out the cutting bar. Use it to snag the side of the bar and pull it out. Now, every bar can be flipped around for 4 clean positions, then rotated for a total of 8 clean positions on every bar. Then put it back in.

There is also an optional stand available. It has two shelves and adjustable leveling feet and it is a guarantee that your cutter will not be to heavy or too large for your work area.

Challenge Spartan 150SA Semi-Automatic Paper Cutter Review

Do you need a heavy-duty paper cutter for your workplace that also happens to be remarkably durable? If so, you'll want to check out the Challenge Spartan 150SA Semi-Automatic Paper Cutter. This machine is one of the more durable ones you'll find and it also has an excellent cutting capacity. Let's take a closer look at this device to see what its has to offer you.

  • This machine can cut paper that's up to 15.75" wide so you'll be able to easily cut both letter- and legal-sized sheets. There's 9" of space in front of the blade so you'll have a lot of room in which to work.

  • The 150SA has a great cutting capacity thanks to its 1/2-horsepower motor. It's able to slice through 1.5" of paper at once, which is over 200 sheets. This is a great machine to use if you want to quickly cut a lot of paper.

  • When you use the 150SA, you'll be able to stay safe because it's equipped with safety shields on both the front and rear tables. (The front shield will pop up when the machine is done cutting.) Also, this machine requires two-handed operation so your fingers won't be anywhere near the blade during cutting.

  • This device comes with a manual clamp to keep your paper in place when you cut it. This clamp proves more than 200% more force than a lever clamping mechanism so you can get a much better cut.

  • The 150SA has an illuminated cutting line so you'll be able to see where the paper will be cut before you actually lower the blade. There's also an LED backgauge position display so you'll be able to tweak the backgauge's settings to your liking.

  • Challenge is known for making extremely durable paper cutters and they've done so again with the 150SA. This machine is made from a number of high-quality materials including cast aluminum and iron, as well as heavy-duty steel. This is definitely one cutter that's able to handle whatever comes its way. Also, this device features maintenance-free gibs so you'll never need to worry about lubricating them. (Gibs are parts that control the blade position.)

  • This cutter is pretty large so you're going to need a rather roomy work surface for it. Its dimensions are 21.5" x 25.75" x 31". If you don't have adequate space for it, you can order a stand along with it. Also, be sure to get some help moving this device because it weighs 170 pounds.

  • Finally, the 150SA is covered by a one-year warranty so you'll be able to have it repaired or replaced if the unit you get turns out to be defective.

The Challenge Spartan 150SA is a first-rate cutter that's perfect for a variety of work environments. This machine is very durable and it's able to slice through a terrific amount of paper at once. It has a lot of advanced features such as the illuminated cutting line and the front and rear safety shields. Plus, it comes with a good warranty. Be sure to check out the 105SA today if you need a durable cutter.

Q:
I am cutting books I have put together with a padding press to make mini pads-Does this machine get hot when you cut? And is it easy to clean?
Asked by J. Annabelle 11 months ago
A:
The machine doesn't get hot when you cut. The knife will pass through paper or pads without any real sort of friction or issue. Cleaning the machine isn't too difficult. The bed of the cutter can be wiped down fairly easily. The blade can be removed from the cutter for cleaning. However, it is important to follow blade replacement instructions very closely when removing the blade as doing this improperly can be very dangerous.

Q:
What is the smallest size I can cut down paper on this machine?
Asked by Andrea H. 11 months ago
A:
The backstop for the paper will allow you to cut as little as 1-15/16" off the front of an item. However you can cut paper smaller by setting the back stop deeper and having the portion of your item to cut in front of the blade. For instance you can take an 11 inch sheet of paper and if you wanted to cut a 1/2" strip of paper off the end you could simply set the backstop to 10.5". 10.5" would be behind the blade and 1/2" would be in front after cutting.
