Overview and Change a Punch Head

Transcript: This is the SKILCRAFT Heavy-Duty Adjustable 3-Hole Punch!

I’ll start with an overview of the hole punch, and end on how to change a punch head.

First off, we’ll punch the maximum amount of pages with 28(20 lb paper). It’s a bit of a tight fit for this many pages, and punching it is not all that easy and requires a pretty decent amount of pressure. But in the end it does a good job.

Another thing to note, if you grasp the handle, you’ll end up hitting your fingers on the way down. The best motion is to have an open palm on the way down.

You’ll see that the punch heads can be aligned using the inch measurements on the front.

On the back, you can also adjust the margin stops for thicker or thinner margins. Also note that the pages are limited by the punch heads at a certain point as well.

With the adjustable edge guide, it is open to have evenly center punches on a wide variety of paper sizes. The edge guide pulls out after the 18 inch mark.

With fully moveable and removable punch heads, it opens up the possibilities for a number of punches, from one, two, three, four…five…

To empty the trimmings, the easiest way would be to flip it upside-down over a trash or recycle—but you can also push on the bottom plate and remove it from the punch. It pushes firmly back into place from the bottom.

Now to change a punch head.

First remove one of the side screws, and loosen all the punch heads, and the depth of margin stops. Then pull out the square bar.

Next, holding the rounded bar is a circular locking piece. Take a screw drive to pry this off. Make sure to cup your hand around it in case it goes shooting off across the room.

Then pull the bar out as needed and remove any of the punch heads. Slide any new ones in and push the bar back into position. Getting the lock piece on, for me at least was the hardest part—if you know and easier way, we’re welcome to hear you input.

Slide the punch heads into position, and put the square bar back on, slipping the depth margin stops in. Finish it off with the final screw.
