The purpose of this video is to show you how to align and make a custom 3 ring binder for a proof of concept using the sample set. In production, this method would not be adequate. To work at production speeds and minimize waste, use a fastbind casemaker such as the H32L Pro, or the H46 Pro.

The first step is to ensure that you cover is orientated correctly, then turn your print over with the lining still on. Align the uniboard binder with ¾” on all sides.

Next, lightly mark the corners to give yourself a guide. Remove the board, and peel back the liner and fold along your marks. Use your markers to continue the marks onto the sticky side of your printed cover. This will help you position the board when you place it down.

With your marks finished, remove the liner from the top 2 inches. Gently place your board with the holes to the right. The liner will allow you to move the board, and align it with your corner marks, and perfectly square. Press down on the exposed area of the cover. Next, reach underneath and pull the liner off while holding the top of the board.

Now that the board is on, cut off the corners of the cover 3 millimeters away from the board’s corner, and at a 45 degree angle. It is important not to cut this too close.

Flip the cover over, press out any air bubbles you may see, and roll the entire surface to make sure the the best adhesion between the cover and board.

Now, use the table to fold and wrap the edges. Stand the board perpendicular to the table, and apply downward pressure on the edge, shimmying it from side to side. Continue to wrap the end of cover over the board, and press on the edges.

Repeat this step on the other side. Use the edge and shimmy it, bring it down to fold the cover, and make sure the end is tacked to the board.

Next, pinch the corners or the cover, where it overlaps a small amount. This is an important step that is easily missed. Press down and push against the board.

Repeat the wrapping step on the short sides. Press and shimmy, fold, and press.

After pre-trimming the inner sheet, leaving a tenth of an inch on all four sides, remove about an inch of the liner, creasing and folding it in place. Place the inner cover onto the board, making sure it is properly aligned. Hold it in place and press the exposed one inch. Gently pull the liner as you push down the material, making sure there are no folds nor bubbles. It is recommended to use a press, such as a laminator to run the board through using the heat and pressure of the rollers for the best adhesion.

Before adding the rings, place a piece of chipboard into the gulleys for a nice fold on the cover. Now, find the pre-drilled holes with your finger, and use an instrument, such as a pen to punch through the covers.

Next, place the ring mechanism onto the board (if using a D-ring, make sure the flat side faces the right). and from the outside of the cover, insert the included post into the hole. On the inside, connect it with the screw, but don’t tighten it all the way. Do the same for the other end, connecting the screw and post together to hold the rings to the cover. Tighten both ends, and you have completely a fully customized ring binder.

Using a H32L Pro or H46 Pro casemaker will be approximately 6-10 times faster than doing it by hand, without any waste.
