Congratulations on your purchase of the new EZ-Lam School Budget Laminator. This unit is designed to provide years of trouble-free service. The EZ-School Budget has a digital heat controller. Users can easily adjust the set temperature to achieve the best quality lamination. The controller has been calibrated to accurately display the temperature in the laminating range. The heater switch on the right side cover activates the controller. When the switch is turned on, the controller will flash a two-letter code and then display the heated roller temperature. When the switch is on, the controller will send power to the heaters, provided the set temperature is higher than the ambient temperature. For safety reasons, the machine was shipped with the set temperature at 250-degrees Fahrenheit. To set the temperature on the controller, press and hold the appropriate arrow until the desired temperature is reached. Then press both arrows to save the setting. The motor switch has on and off positions. Before we can laminate, we’ll need to load the rolls of film on to the machine.

The following instructions apply to polyene film rolls. These rolls have the shiny side out and the dull side in. Turn on the heater switch to allow the heated rollers to heat up. Remove the feed table. Load the top supply roll. Slide the film mandrel into the roll of film. Use the grooves in the mandrel to line up the edges of the film roll. If you are facing the front of the laminator, the film should unwind towards you from the bottom of the roll. Place the mandrel ends into the slots in the side plates of the laminator. Pull 6 inches to 12 inches of film from the roll. Pass the film under the upper idler bar and drape over the heated rollers. Make sure the shiny side of the film is against the rollers. For the bottom supply roll, slide the film mandrel into the roll of film. If you’re facing the front of the laminator, the film should unwind away from you from the bottom of the roll. Place the mandrel ends into the slots in the side plates of the laminator. Pull 6 inches to 12 inches of film from the roll. Pass the film under the lower idler bar and over the front of the top film and the heated rollers. Since the heated rollers are hot, the lower film will adhere to the top film. Turn the motor switch to the on position and feed your starter card through the front rollers. Check to make sure the card runs completely through the back rollers. If the film is wrinkled, adjust the tension on the rollers by turning the mandrel tension adjustment knob clockwise to increase, counter-clockwise to decrease until the film passes through the heated rollers without wrinkles and the film between the laminating and pull rollers is right. Return the feed table to its proper position. Make sure the paper guide on the feed table is located so that the right edge of the item will enter the laminator at the desired position. The machine is now ready to begin laminating. Simply feed your documents into the laminator one at a time, allowing enough space between documents for trimming.

When you’re done laminating, turn the motor switch to off and use the supplied zippy cutter to cut off the laminated documents. Unloading the film is the reverse of loading it. Place the safety shield in the up position. Remove the feed table. Use the zippy cutter to cut the film between the bottom supply roll and the heated roller. Cut the film between the top supply roll and the heated roller. Grab the top and bottom film with one hand and pull towards yourself while reversing the motor. The power fuse is located at the rear of the machine. Remove the fuse holder, remove the fuse, replace with a fresh 15-Amp fuse.

Staff Review

Xyron EZ-Laminator Review

Xyron’s EZ-Laminator occupies a place on the lower-volume, small office, home, and craft end of the laminating world. Cold laminating has many inherent advantages for the occasional user in that it is safe, fast, and very easy to learn. In the following review we take a quick look at the EZ-Laminator and present you with a list of what we consider to be this machines strengths, as well as its limitations.

Strengths:

  1. We were pleased to find that he EZ-Laminator is a very easy machine to use. All you need to do in order to achieve great lamination is to place the document into the feed and crank the handle. In this process, there is no need for heat, batteries, or even electricity.
  2. When it’s time to change or replace the laminating film, all you need to do is to left the lid and change out the cartridge. We were pleasantly surprised at how easy the cartridges were to access and change. The cartridges also have an alert system that lets users know when the time to change it is near.
  3. We found the EZ-Laminator to be a remarkably versatile laminating system. The cartridges are interchangeable and let the user change laminating styles very quickly and easily. For instance, there are cartridges for laminating items on both sides or for laminating one side while applying adhesive to the other side. Plus, it is all cold laminating and that means that there is no danger of suffering any kind of burn while changing out the cartridges or working with the laminator in any way.
  4. With the EZ-Laminator it is also possible to trim your laminated documents right in the machine, or the user can take out the cutting tray and trim the items by hand if that is more convenient.

Weaknesses:

  1. The nine inch width of the EZ-Laminator is a pretty decent capacity for a machine like this. However, if you are going to need to laminate documents that are wider than nine inches, you will have to look elsewhere. Investing in a machine that is twelve inches wide will not only allow you to laminate larger format documents, it will also enable you to increase your productivity by more than twenty percent over a nine inch laminator.
  2. As it is operated manually, the EZ-Laminator is probably not the best choice for any kind of high volume or longer run laminating jobs. Ideally, this machine will be used for home or small office projects, such as scrapbooking and other crafts. This is a great machine for occasional use and is not cut out for producing thousands of documents or prints.
  3. Encapsulation and sticker creation cartridges are available for this machine. However, those are the only two tasks that this machine is able to perform. Xyron makes other cold laminating machines that can create finished products in matte laminate, with multi-use adhesive, and there are also some machines that can create magnets. If these are features you think you might want, you should probably take a look at some of Xyron’s other, more feature-rich machines.
