Martin Yale 1000 Strip Cut Shredder Review
Martin Yale is definitely a leader in the paper shredder business, having developed the impressive ScriptStroyer pharmacy shredder as well as spinning off new companies such as Intimus, a premier brand of paper shredders and paper handling equipment. In addition to their heavy-duty machines, Martin Yale has some good personal-sized shredders available. One of these is the Martin Yale 1000 strip-cut shredder. This review will fill you in on what the Martin Yale 1000 can do so you can decide if one would be just right for your home or office.
The Martin Yale 1000SC is a strip-cut paper shredder that can destroy credit cards, ID badges, paper clips, and staples in addition to paper. It can shred 10 sheets of paper per pass and it has a throat that’s nine inches wide, so you can easily shred the most common sizes of paper. There’s also a separate slot for credit cards. The shreds the Martin Yale 1000 creates measure 5/32″, which offer a respectable level of security. This unit’s wastebasket has a capacity of 5.8 gallons and there’s a window that allows you see how full the basket is getting and when it’s time to empty it. The bin also has a dust-proof enclosure to make it easy to empty the bin without making a huge mess. The shredder has four locking casters so it can be easily moved, as well as stay in one place when needed.
Since the 1000SC is a personal-sized shredder, it can be stored underneath or next to a desk, so you can conveniently shred your unwanted documents. However, you should note that because this is a personal-sized machine, it’s not meant for continuous, heavy-duty use by a lot of different people. (A commercial-sized shredder is better for that kind of use.) Also, if you’re going to be shredding very private information, a cross-cut shredder can give you more security than a strip-cut model. Luckily, Martin Yale makes the 1000 shredder in both strip- and cross-cut editions, with the cross cut model costing a little bit more than the strip cut system (both are still under $100.00), so if you need more security, it’s easy to get and you’ll still be able to enjoy working with a high-quality Martin Yale machine.
Some of the other features of the 1000SC Shredder include the LED controls that let you know when the machine’s on standby, if there’s a paper jam, and if the unit is overheating so you can prevent the machine from being damaged. This machine is lacking one key thing: a separate chamber for credit card waste. It’s not a mandatory feature, but it’s nice to have because it makes recycling much easier.
For such a reasonably priced machine, the Martin Yale 1000 strip-cut shredder has some great features, such as the machine’s shredding capacity and its ability to destroy credit cards. If you need a deskside paper shredder for your home or office that costs less than $100.00 and is easy to store and transport, the Martin Yale 1000 strip-cut shredder could be the right machine for you.
