When it comes to small office shredders, the choices are endless. But one machine to take note of is the Martin Yale 3000 Strip Cut. Designed for a smaller office with about 1-3 users, the 3000 offers many features that make it easy to operate. Let’s take a closer look.
Why it’s great:
- Ease of use. You don’t have to worry about turning this shredder on; an optical eye controlled by light barrier senses paper in the feed and begins shredding when needed. An LED control panel shows the status of the machine, and includes options for Stand-by, Paper Jam, Overheat, Receptacle Removed or Full, and Reverse Operation. With one glance you can easily discern what is going on with your machine if it isn’t shredding properly.
- Convenient size and mobility. At only 26 inches tall, the 3000 can sit tidily next to a desk or a table. It is compact enough to fit in even tiny offices. Four locking casters on the bottom allow the 3000 to be easily transported from one location to another.
- Quick, diverse shredding capabilities. The nine inch feed entry takes up to 21 sheets at once, including stapled and paperclipped documents. A separate safety slot offers the safe disposal of credit cards, CDs, and DVDs. This prevents plastic shards from accidentally flying out of the device into your eyes. With confidential information coming in many forms these days, it’s nice to be able to destroy it all.
- Clean, easy waste removal. The pieces created by the blades fall into an 11.1 gallon pull-out bin for easy disposal. The bin is housed in a dustproof enclosed compartment with a window so you can monitor the amount of shreds collected.
Things to Consider:
- Security. The strips created by this model only measure a level 2 security. Most personal and generic office documents stay safe at this level. However, if your office requires disposal of sensitive material, you might be more interested in this model in a cross cut version.
- Size. Since this machine is designed for small offices, the capacities reflect only light duty needs. This includes a limited nine inch feed and a modest 11.1 gallons of waste storage. When utilized in a small situation, this machine is more than adequate. If you need a device for use by multiple people, you may want to consider an upgrade to a larger model with more capacity.
- Run time. As with many smaller shredders, the motor on this one is not rated for continuous run. This means that after a short period of heavy use, the machine will need to turn off for a cool down time to avoid overheating the motor. This prolongs the life of your shredder but can be a hassle if you have high volume needs. While smaller offices generally don’t find this to be a problem, those with higher shredding needs may prefer a larger model with a more powerful motor.
