Flip the tab in the back open and shake out the trimmings from time to time, then close it back up.
There are simple inch measurements on the side, starting at the edge you align your pages.
To lock the unit, push down on the lever and press the tab in. Push down again and push it out to unlock it.
Or to have a little more fun, hold it closed in one hand and tip it from one side to the next to either unlock or lock it.
