Royal Sovereign EL-9DF Laminator Review

Royal Sovereign makes a number of laminators of both the pouch and roll varieties. One of their smallest pouch laminators is the EL-9DF. It’s a very compact device with some great special features (such as the ability to process mounting boards) but it has a couple of weaknesses as well. Let’s take a look at what they are.

Strengths:

  • The EL-9DF can accept documents that are small (i.e. name tags, business cards) and large (i.e. menus, signs). Its feed opening is 9.4 inches wide so you can laminate both letter- and legal-sized documents that measure 8.5” x 11” and 8.5” x 14” respectively.
  • This laminator is compatible with pouches that are 3, 5, and 7 mil thick. All three of these thicknesses are great for just about every document, and you can use both thermal and pressure-sensitive pouches. As mentioned before, you can even use mounting boards with this device so long as they’re no thicker than 0.12”.
  • You’ll be able to laminate a letter-sized document in seconds because the EL-9DF can process up to 1.4 feet of material in one minute. This will enable you to get all of your documents laminated pretty quickly.
  • The EL-9DF has both hot and cold lamination settings. The cold setting is perfect for ink-jet printouts, photographs, and color copies. To take advantage of this setting, make sure you have a good supply of pressure-sensitive pouches handy.
  • When you’re using this machine’s hot setting, you technically don’t need to use a carrier. However, you probably should so the adhesive that seeps out of the pouch won’t coat the inside of the device.
  • This laminator is pretty compact with dimensions of 17″ (width) x 8.7″ (depth) x 4.6″ (height). It’s small enough to fit on your desk. It also only weighs about 6 pounds so it will be easy to move.
  • This machine is really reasonably priced and will probably cost you less than $200.00. It comes with a one-year warranty.

Weaknesses:

  • This device doesn’t have a reverse mode so taking care of a pouch jam could be tricky.
  • Unlike a lot of laminators on the market, the EL-9DF lacks an automatic shut-off feature. You’ll want to make sure to turn off the machine when you’re done with it so the motor doesn’t overheat.
  • Since the feed opening is just over 9 inches wide, you won’t be able to laminate wide-format documents.

As you can see, the Royal Sovereign EL-9DF has a lot of features that make it stand out. Not very many small laminators can process mounting boards, so that alone makes this machine worth a look. It’s also great that it works quickly and has hot and cold settings. Plus, it’s small so it won’t take up very much room. However, you’ll need to decide if you can live with this machine’s weaknesses, particularly its lack of a reverse mode. Nonetheless, if you do decide that the EL-9DF is what you want, you’re likely to be very pleased with this product. Take a look at it today.
