Use the knob on the left to switch between punching 11 inch paper or an oversized cover sheet. Next, place your pages along the edge of the knob. You can punch up to 9 sheets at a time. When doing so, slide the pages straight in with the machine, then pull the lever to make your punch. To bind your book, place your plastic comb into the spines then shift the comb to the left. Pull the smaller lever on the right to open the teeth of the comb. You can now carefully thread your project into the teeth. Once you're done, you can pull the lever back and your book will close. Then you can pull your book out and you're ready to go. This machine's bind capacity is 160 sheets. And that is the Swingline GBC CombBind BindMate. The same handle punches for comb binding as well as three hole punching. With simple features, buttons that are easy to use, and a solid construction, let's take a look at how easy it is to bind a book with the BindMate Personal. With all your supplies at the ready, let's begin punching. We start with the covers. The BindMate Personal can accommodate both letter size and oversize covers. With a simple knob, you assure consistency in all your punching. The punch capacity for the BindMate personal is eight sheets of 20lb paper per lift. Its binding capacity is up to 125 sheets on a 5/8 inch diameter plastic comb. When all your covers and document proper are punched, you're ready for the binding. Select the most appropriate size plastic comb for your project. You set the plastic comb on the metal teeth on the top of the machine. Once threaded on the metal teeth, be sure to slide the comb just to the left so the underteeth grab. The punching arm is used to open the comb; set the lock to keep the teeth open. In comb binding, always be sure to keep the teeth faced up and the project faced down; that way the book does not fall apart in use. Place the project over the teeth of the comb, release the lock, and your project is finished. It's that easy with the BindMate Personal by GBC. Welcome to MyBinding video. We're looking at the GBC BindMate, a personal plastic comb binding and three hole punch system. Designed for the small or home office that needs both a plastic comb binding machine and three hole punch, the GBC BindMate Personal is a great idea. The punching and binding system is easy to use and the product works well. With just a simple switch you choose between three hole punching and 19-hole comb punching. It can punch and bind both letter sized sheets and oversized covers with a simple side margin control switch. The lift arm is for both punching holes and opening combs. And once you get the hang of it, the thumb-operated lock is quite convenient. Also convenient is the handle for easy carrying around the home or office. Although the machine offers the ability to punch documents with two different punching patterns, it does not have a very large punching capacity. The BindMate is rated for 6-8 sheets of 20lb paper at a time. This is about normal for an inexpensive machine. However, punching thick documents or thicker papers with this machine can be very time consuming. And as you can see here, it took a lot of effort for us to punch through the eight pages that it claimed; really, 4-5 is what you can expect for ease. The comb opener is easy to use and medium duty and can hold combs up to 5/8 inch thick, which translates to about 125 pages in thickness. But on this machine, that would be a lot of work. And finally, the punched holes are easily emptied by the waste basket in the back; just pull it right out. Overall, we like the BindMate Personal. It's lightweight, inexpensive, easy to use, and dual functioning. However, this machine is not a good choice for high volume users or for companies who need to bind large documents. The Strengths and Weaknesses of the Dual-Duty GBC BindMate

If you’ve ever wanted a comb binding machine, but didn’t think you could afford one, you should really check out the GBC BindMate. This is an innovative product that’s great for those on a budget, especially since its has all the functionality of a comb binding machine and also does double duty as a three-hole punch. It’s really two machines in one so it’s great for all kinds of projects both at home and in the workplace. However, the BindMate does have a couple of shortcomings that you need to know about. Keep reading to discover the strengths and weaknesses of this dual-duty product.

Strengths:

  • This is a combination device that offers the functionality of both a three-hole punch and a comb binding system. It’s compact and would be great for environments in which both devices are needed, but space is limited.
  • The BindMate can bind books containing up to 125 pages using spines that are 5/8″ thick. It would be great for school projects, short professional documents, and more.
  • You can use oversized covers with this product, so you’ll have some flexibility when it comes to the appearance of your documents.
  • This device has a D-shaped punching handle. It’s ergonomically friendly and will be able to be used with ease by everyone.
  • It’s ridiculously easy to switch between three-hole punching and comb binding. All you need to do is flip a switch that’s located on the front of the device.
  • This is a very lightweight device that only weighs 6 pounds. It has a carrying handle so you’ll be able to take it wherever you need to go.
  • The BindMate is very reasonably priced and will cost you less than $100.00. The low price makes this device ideal for anyone who’s on a budget but still needs a punching/binding machine. Plus, this product has a limited one-year warranty.

Weaknesses:

  • The BindMate’s main weakness is its punching capacity: it can only punch 8 sheets of paper at once. The punching capacity isn’t really too surprising given the size and price point of this device, but it is still disappointing. It would obviously take a very long time to punch a lot of paper.
  • The 125-page binding capacity won’t be large enough for some offices.
  • This machine lacks features commonly found in higher-end models, such as disengageable dies and an open throat.

As you can see, the BindMate really lacks a decent punching capacity, although that shouldn’t be much of a problem if the documents you punch and bind are on the shorter side. This product isn’t ideal if you need to produce very thick documents frequently because it was really designed for occasional use. However, if that describes your punching and binding needs, then the BindMate is a terrific choice. It’s great that you can use it as both a comb binding machine and a three-hole punch, and that the handle can be utilized by both right- and left-handed users. And let’s not forget that it’s easy to transport and is priced low enough so that everyone who needs one can afford it. If you need an inexpensive comb binding machine that can double as a three-hole punch, the BindMate is what you’ve been looking for.

Questions & Answers

Thank you for your question. No, you can not. The punching pattern is not the same. The proclick pattern is the same as a 3:1 pitch wire, so you could use a 3:1 wire machine.

Thank you for your question. The Swingline GBC BindMate Manual Comb Binding Machine does not have disengagable dies so there is the potential for half punches on the edge of the page if you are punching stock that is less than 11" wide.

Thank you for your question. Yes, you are able to use Zipbind spines with all standard comb binding machines. Zipbind spines have the same spacing between "loops" as combs, so all sizes would be compatible and would work.

The BindMate machine has been recently re-tested. In order to punch 9 sheets at a time you need to make sure the binding handle is pushed completely back before inserting the paper. The throat clearance is tight and if the handle is not fully pushed back it will be difficult to reach the maximum punch capacity of 9 sheets.
