There is a tool/key inside that you place over the side pin; manually turn the key and it should lift the mechanism off of the bottom plate. If it isn't working, flip up the lever that holds the cartridge in-place and remove the cartridge. That should also release it. I have a different model, but the cartridge models basically work the same.

Unfortunately, the back stop is not adjustable. However, the Optima 20 Electric Stapler (SWI-48208) has an adjustable backstop for accurate and precise staple positioning
