Intimus has become one of the top names in the shredder industry, known for delivering quality products. Their S16.87 line of shredder baler systems combines fast, high capacity shredding with a compaction system to reduce scrap volume by up to 70 percent. This model also contains automatic and safety features similar to their smaller machines to provide you with a secure and efficient waste disposal system. Here is a closer look at the S16.87 7.8mm device.

Strengths:

• This shredder is designed for easy use. A key switch turns on the main power. Simple push buttons operate the rest with controls for forward, stop, and reverse. Once the forward button is pressed, both the cutter and conveyor belt start. If you accidentally toss too large a stack onto the belt, reverse kicks in automatically to unclog the jam, then restarts itself once everything is clear. Indicator lights offer the user status updates on the machine.

• Safety features work to prevent any accidental injuries. A wide emergency stop bar located across the front of the device activates by pressure. If someone leans on it while reaching for the blades, power is cut to the motor to prevent ties or fingers from getting caught in the cutting shafts. There are also safety switches for the Ejector Opening and the Press Feed Flap. An additional safety interlock is found at the bale ejection flap.

• Sturdy cutting cylinders are driven by a powerful motor and carry a five year warranty, with parts and labor covered by a one year warranty. The motor itself is rated for continuous duty, meaning it can shred large amounts of material without needing a cool down period. A motor protection device further protects the engine from being overloaded.

• A 20 inch wide throat takes in up to 400 sheets at once, shredding them at a rate of 50 feet per minute. This equals out to approximately 1250 pounds of shredded waste per hour. Items shred can include credit cards, CDs, and DVDs. Narrow strips fall into the compacting chamber of the baler. The blades and baler work together continuously and simultaneously.

• The baler has the added benefit of delivering bundles ready for recycling. Approximately 5-8 cartons are created per hour. A locking door on the top of the machine offers quick addition of non-shredded items to the bale. Bundles are compacted by an 8 ton hydraulic press and then ejected by a simple push button. An audible signal alerts the user to a completed bale.

Weaknesses:

• This machine weighs well over one ton. Luckily there are casters on the bottom to help you move it, though it will still be heavy to wheel around. We think this won't provide much of a problem for most users.

• The narrow strips created only provide a level one security rating. This is fine for generic office shredding, especially considering the compactness those shreds turn into. But companies with sensitive material to dispose of may prefer a higher security, cross cut version of this model.

As seen by the many strengths, the Intimus S16.87 is an excellent shredder baler system. We think it would work very well for any industry or large business needing a high volume shredder with low volume waste.
