Standard 20 lb paper works well for everyday manuals, reports, handouts, and documents where keeping thickness and cost manageable is important. A 24 lb or 28 lb sheet can feel more substantial, improve opacity, and support materials that receive frequent handling. Heavier 32 lb paper may suit presentation documents, though it increases the total thickness and may require a larger comb. Printer specifications should also be considered because heavier stock may need different tray settings or a straighter paper path. Select the weight according to print quality, durability, mailing weight, and the number of sheets that must fit within the finished binding.

Twenty-pound paper is often suitable for high-page-count documents, routine office printing, instructional materials, and projects where economy matters. Its lower thickness allows more sheets to fit within a given comb diameter than heavier paper. It is also familiar to most copier and printer workflows. However, heavy two-sided printing may show through more readily, and frequently handled materials may benefit from a stronger sheet. For routine jobs that prioritize capacity and straightforward printing, 20 lb pre-punched paper can reduce punching time while keeping the completed document from becoming unnecessarily bulky.

Load the paper so the punched edge appears on the intended binding side after printing. This is especially important with duplex printing, landscape layouts, booklet-style documents, and printers that rotate or reverse sheets internally. Confirm that the printer accepts the selected paper weight and that its rollers do not catch the holes. A small test should include both single-sided and double-sided output when both will be used. Keep important text and graphics away from the binding margin because the holes and comb occupy part of the sheet. Consistent loading instructions can prevent an entire batch from being printed with the holes on the wrong edge.

Keep the paper flat, dry, and protected inside its packaging until needed. Moisture, curled corners, dust, and crushed punched edges can interfere with printer feeding and document alignment. Store opened packages in a controlled environment rather than near heating vents, exterior doors, or damp areas. Avoid placing heavy materials on top of exposed punched edges. A heavier option such as 28 lb pre-punched paper may provide a firmer feel, but it still requires careful storage. Fan the sheets gently before loading and do not overfill the printer tray.
