Shrink Film

Gauge refers to film thickness and should be selected according to product weight, shape, edge sharpness, handling, and transportation conditions. Lighter film can work for smooth, lightweight retail items that mainly need dust protection and a neat appearance. Heavier film may be more suitable for bulky products, sharper corners, multipacks, or items handled repeatedly during storage and shipping. Using the thickest option is not always necessary because it increases material use and may require more heat. Produce a test package using the actual product and evaluate puncture resistance, seal strength, clarity, and shrink appearance before ordering film for a large production run.

The film normally needs a secure seam before heat is applied. The correct sealing method depends on the film construction, package size, production volume, and desired seal location. Small operations may use a suitable manual or impulse-style sealer, while larger runs can benefit from equipment that creates repeatable seals more quickly. The seal should be strong enough to remain closed as the film contracts but not so wide or uneven that it affects appearance. Operations packaging bags or repeated product sizes may also use continuous bag sealers when their material and process requirements support that type of sealing workflow.

Begin with film that fits the product properly and confirm that the heat source is appropriate for the material. Excess film tends to gather at corners, while film that is too tight may split as it contracts. Apply heat evenly and keep the heat source moving rather than concentrating it in one spot. Sharp corners may need protection or a heavier film. Air must also escape from the package as the film shrinks, so some applications require small ventilation openings. Test the full process using the exact film, seal, product, and heat settings. A smooth result depends on balanced material size, seal quality, heat distribution, and operator technique.

Shrink film is useful when the product needs a close-fitting outer layer, clear presentation, tamper evidence, or protection from dust and handling. Stretch film is usually wrapped around loads or grouped items using tension rather than heat, making it practical for pallets and bundled shipments. Carton tape is intended primarily for closing corrugated boxes rather than wrapping the product itself. The correct material depends on whether the goal is product presentation, bundling, load stability, or box closure. Packages shipped in cartons may still require suitable carton sealing tape after the individual item has been shrink wrapped.
