Utility Knives and Cutters

For paper and finishing work, choose a blade style that gives clean control without tearing the material. Fine-point craft blades are useful for detailed work, labels, and light trimming. Standard utility blades are better for general cutting, packaging, board, and heavier materials. Snap-off blades can be practical when users need a fresh edge often, but they should be handled carefully and disposed of properly. The blade should match the material thickness and cut type. Cutting curves, trimming straight edges, and opening cartons may each need a different blade. Keep replacement blades available so staff do not keep using a dull edge.

Yes, utility knives should be used with a proper cutting surface whenever possible. A good mat protects the table, helps preserve the blade edge, and gives the user a safer, more predictable surface. Cutting directly on desks, counters, or production tables can damage the surface and make the blade drag or slip. For repeated hand cutting, cutting mats are a practical support item. Choose a mat larger than the material being cut so the user has space for the sheet, ruler, and hand placement. A stable cutting surface improves both safety and cut quality.

Use a cutter or trimmer when you need straight, repeatable cuts across multiple sheets or finished pieces. A utility knife is flexible and useful for one-off trimming, packaging, and detailed work, but it is not the fastest or most consistent choice for repeated production cuts. If the same cut has to be made many times, a trimmer can improve speed and reduce variation. For thicker stacks, a stack cutter or guillotine may be more appropriate. If your team is doing more production work than hand trimming, compare cutters and trimmers before relying only on utility knives.

Keep blades sharp, retract them when not in use, cut away from the body, and store knives where loose blades cannot cause injury. A dull blade is unsafe because it requires more pressure and can slip suddenly. Use a ruler or guide when straight cuts matter, and keep fingers out of the blade path. Dispose of used blades in a proper container, not loose in the trash. In shared work areas, label tools and replace damaged handles quickly. If knives are part of a larger cutting station, keep related cutter accessories and knife guards organized so staff use the correct tool instead of improvising with unsafe alternatives.
