Choose thickness according to how rigid and frequently handled the finished tag will be, while confirming the laminator can process that thickness. A 5 mil pouch gives useful protection with some flexibility. A 7 mil pouch creates a firmer tag for regular handling. A 10 mil pouch provides the most rigid result among these options and can suit tags expected to receive heavier use. Remember that mil thickness is normally stated per side of the pouch. A thicker pouch may need more heat or slower feeding, depending on the machine. The best option protects the tag without making it too stiff for the intended holder, loop, slot, or storage method.

A slot is useful when the finished tag will connect directly to a loop, strap, clip, ring, or lanyard. Select the slot direction according to how the tag should hang and where the attachment hardware will sit. Laminating pouches with slots are available for several card and tag formats, so match the orientation as carefully as the pouch size. A pouch without a slot is suitable when the tag will slide into a separate holder or when a different attachment method will be added later. Do not punch too close to the insert or sealed edge because that can weaken the bond. Planning the attachment method before ordering avoids producing tags that are protected but cannot be mounted correctly.

Leave a continuous clear border around the insert so the pouch layers can bond to each other. The paper or card should not touch the outside edge, and trimming should never cut into the sealed area. The exact border depends on the pouch and insert, but it must be wide enough to stay intact through handling, moisture, and repeated attachment. Keep the insert centred, especially near a prepunched slot where the seal already carries extra stress. After lamination, allow the tag to cool flat before trimming or attaching hardware. A clean border is more important than making the printed insert fill every available millimetre because the protection comes from the seal surrounding the tag.

The laminator must accept the pouch width and the selected 5, 7, or 10 mil thickness. Adjustable heat or thickness settings are useful when several pouch weights are used, while a reverse or jam release control can help recover small pieces that feed incorrectly. Pouch laminators should be fully warmed before the tag is inserted, and the sealed edge should normally enter first unless the machine instructions state otherwise. Small pouches may also require a carrier in certain machines. Feed one sample straight through and inspect it for cloudiness, bubbles, edge separation, or curl. The correct machine and setting should create a clear seal without overheating the print or distorting the pouch.
