It's the more common choice for ID cards, menus, and signage where color clarity and visual impact are priorities. Matte reduces glare significantly, which matters for pieces viewed under bright overhead lighting, anything that will be read for extended periods, or items where you want to write on the surface after laminating. If a matte finish is a deciding factor for your application, that's a different product category rather than a variant of this one. Matte laminating pouches cover the matte option across comparable size formats.

For photos that will be displayed, frequently handled, or carried, 7mil is genuinely appropriate. The added rigidity means the photo holds its shape rather than flexing and potentially cracking the laminate over time, and it resists fingerprint smearing better than thinner pouches during repeated handling. For photos that are simply being filed or stored in an album, 5mil is usually sufficient and costs less per piece. The size selection also matters for photos — choosing a pouch that matches the photo's actual dimensions or rounds up slightly to the next standard size produces the cleanest sealed border and clearest presentation.
