A thinner pouch keeps the bookmark flexible and lightweight, which may be suitable for promotional inserts, temporary reading aids, or materials placed inside delicate books. A medium thickness provides more structure for bookmarks handled regularly without making them excessively rigid. A 10 mil pouch creates a stiff result that can withstand frequent use, but the laminator must be rated for that thickness. Remember that the stated mil measurement generally applies to each side of the pouch. Consider how the bookmark will be trimmed, whether corners will be rounded, and whether the added thickness could damage thin pages when left inside a closed book for long periods.

They can be processed in many pouch laminators, provided the machine supports the pouch thickness and can feed the narrow format evenly. Small pouches may shift or enter at an angle when used in a wide machine. A compatible laminating pouch carrier can help hold the pouch straight and protect the rollers from exposed adhesive when the laminator requires one. Feed the factory-sealed edge first and wait until the machine reaches the proper temperature. The laminator manual should confirm thickness support, carrier requirements, heat settings, and whether very small items need special positioning during feeding.

The border must be wide enough for the adhesive layers to bond directly around the complete paper insert. A narrow, even margin is usually sufficient, but the exact amount depends on the pouch size, trimming plan, and level of handling. Never trim directly against the paper because this breaks the sealed edge and can allow moisture, dirt, or air to reach the insert. Leave extra room near any corner that will be rounded after lamination. Before producing a full quantity, laminate one bookmark, trim it to the intended dimensions, and flex it gently. This test can reveal weak edges, uneven positioning, or insufficient sealing space.

Rounded corners can make a laminated bookmark more comfortable to handle and reduce sharp points that may catch on pages, pockets, or storage containers. The corner cut must remain outside the paper insert so the laminate seal stays intact. Use a corner radius that suits the narrow width of the bookmark; a large radius may remove too much material and weaken the ends. A suitable corner rounder can produce more consistent results than trimming corners by hand. Allow the pouch to cool fully before cutting, then inspect each corner for lifting or exposed paper before the bookmarks are distributed.
