Match the leg length to the thickness of what you're fastening, not just to whatever stapler happens to be on the desk. A standard 1/4" leg handles about 20 to 30 sheets of ordinary paper. Go up to 3/8" through 9/16" for thicker stacks that a standard staple simply can't clinch through. Too short and the legs won't close properly on the back side. Too long and they bend unevenly and leave a rough finish. Crown style, whether the top is flat or slightly arched, changes how evenly the legs get supported as the staple drives through the stack, and an arched crown tends to give a steadier, more consistent result at higher volume. For light, everyday stapling, either style works fine.
