A 5 mil pouch can provide suitable protection for cards that need moderate flexibility and routine handling. A 7 mil pouch creates a firmer result for badges, reference cards, or materials used regularly. A 10 mil pouch produces the most rigid finish but requires a laminator rated to process that thickness. Remember that pouch thickness is normally stated per side, so the finished item includes both layers plus the paper insert. Consider whether the card will be worn, carried, stored in a holder, or used as a reusable teaching aid. Greater thickness can improve rigidity, but it also adds weight and may be unnecessary for temporary or lightly handled items.

A dedicated badge laminator is not always required. Any pouch laminator can be suitable when its feed opening accepts the pouch and its temperature range supports the selected thickness. Small pouches may need a carrier to remain aligned as they pass through wider rollers. The machine instructions should state whether a carrier is required or whether the model is designed for carrier-free use. Schools producing frequent small cards may benefit from an ID badge pouch laminator because its format and controls are intended for repeated badge-size work. Feed the factory-sealed edge first and let the card cool flat.

Use a pre-slotted pouch when the finished card will hang from a lanyard, badge clip, reel, keyring, or strap. A standard pouch is suitable when the card will be carried, inserted into a holder, attached with adhesive, or stored flat. With slotted pouches, choose long-side or short-side placement according to whether the card will hang horizontally or vertically. The insert must remain clear of the slot and leave enough sealed film around it. Standard pouches offer more freedom to place a slot later, but post-lamination punching requires sufficient clear border and careful positioning to avoid cutting into the printed card.

Place the pouch inside a compatible carrier when the laminator recommends one, and feed the carrier with its folded edge first. Centre the card inside the pouch, smooth it flat, and ensure that no corner protrudes beyond the film. Wait until the machine reaches its ready temperature before feeding. Guide the pouch straight into the opening, then release it once the rollers take hold. Do not pull the pouch from the exit side. A clean, undamaged laminating pouch carrier can help keep small pouches aligned and protect the rollers from exposed adhesive during repeated badge production.
