Punching capacity is the maximum number of sheets the machine can safely punch in one lift. Binding capacity is the maximum document thickness that can be assembled with the supported comb size. These numbers should not be treated as interchangeable. A machine capable of binding hundreds of sheets may still punch only a small portion of those pages at once. Exceeding the punch limit can produce incomplete holes, misalignment, jams, or premature wear. Covers may also need to be punched separately because they are thicker than standard paper. Choose a machine that offers enough punching capacity for your normal workload while supporting the largest comb diameter you expect to use.

The comb must be large enough to hold the punched pages without restricting page movement. Count the sheets, include the front and back covers, and then use a sizing guide that accounts for the actual paper and cover thickness. A comb that is too small can make pages difficult to turn and may open under pressure. An oversized comb leaves unnecessary space and can make the finished document feel loose. A manual punch is practical for occasional use, smaller document batches, and workspaces where simplicity is important. An electric punch is better when users prepare many documents, punch heavier lifts, or need to reduce repetitive hand and arm movement. Electric operation can improve consistency, but the machine’s rated sheet capacity must still be followed. Consider who will use the equipment, how often documents are produced, and whether the machine will be shared. A higher-capacity manual model may be sufficient for moderate work, while an electric unit can save time in busy offices and print environments. Binding insertion may still be manual even when the punching stage is powered.

You will need compatible plastic combs, front and back covers, and paper that matches the machine’s punching length. A complete setup may also include pre-punched paper for selected workflows, tab dividers for organized documents, and a comb-size guide. Confirm that the machine uses the standard comb hole pattern before ordering supplies, particularly when replacing equipment or combining materials from an existing inventory. Covers should be suitable for punching and should not exceed the machine’s recommended thickness.
