Coated tabs can feel thicker than plain stock of the same listed weight, so include the finish in the decision. Run a small test with the actual printer, toner coverage, punch, and binding method. Reliable feeding, accurate label placement, and suitable durability are more important than choosing the heavier stock simply because it feels sturdier.

Reinforcement is valuable when users turn the dividers frequently or when the document must remain usable for an extended period. A Mylar or Trilar coating protects the exposed tab area from bending, smudging, and moisture. Documents placed under greater stress may also benefit from reinforced binding edge copier tabs, which strengthen the area around the punched holes. Added film increases bulk, so measure the complete document before selecting a comb, wire, or coil size. The coating can also influence toner adhesion and writing, making a print test worthwhile. Choose plain stock for lighter handling and reinforced stock when the tabs or punched edge will be used repeatedly. The required durability should guide the finish rather than appearance alone.

Uncollated stock is separated by tab position, allowing all copies of the first position to be printed together, followed by the second and third positions. Label each stack clearly and preserve its orientation as it leaves the printer. After printing, assemble one divider from each position in the intended order, then repeat that sequence for every document. A position map prevents the lower and upper tabs from being reversed. Printer settings may require the tab edge to feed first or last, depending on the equipment, so produce a complete sample sequence before processing the full quantity. Confirm label placement, duplex orientation, progression, and binding edge. Careful staging reduces mixed positions and saves time during final assembly.

Punched stock is efficient when the same binding pattern is used repeatedly and the hole layout already matches the text sheets. Uncollated copier tabs offer more flexibility when jobs use different binders, combs, wires, or coils. Before selecting punched stock, confirm the hole count, pitch, shape, margin, and binding edge. A pattern mismatch cannot be corrected after printing. For unpunched stock, verify that the machine can process the selected weight and coating, and reduce the punching batch when necessary. Keep the tab extension clear of the punch path and test one complete divider sequence. The final choice should fit the established production method while keeping holes aligned and tabs evenly exposed.
