11 x 17 Pre-Punched Paper

Standard 20 lb paper keeps manuals and high-sheet-count documents lighter and less bulky. Heavier 24 lb or 28 lb stock can improve opacity and handling, especially for double-sided printing or documents that receive frequent use. A 32 lb sheet gives a more substantial feel but increases the finished spine thickness and mailing weight. Before choosing, confirm that the printer or copier accepts the selected weight at 11 by 17 inches. Also include the heavier stock when sizing the binding element because published sheet capacities often assume 20 lb bond. For long documents, a modest increase in paper weight can create a much thicker stack. Print and bind a short sample using the intended covers before committing to a large quantity.

Coil pitch describes the number and spacing of holes along the binding edge. The coil must have turns that align with those holes, so a 4:1 coil cannot be used with a 5:1 punch pattern. Hole shape can matter as well because round and oval patterns may feed differently through certain inserters. The specifications for coil binding machines identify the pitch produced by the equipment. If the machine label is unavailable, make a test punch and measure the spacing between hole centers. Do not rely on the word “coil” alone. Ordering the correct sheet size with the wrong pitch still produces unusable stock, and there is no practical way to repunch a mismatched pattern cleanly.

The equipment must support tabloid-size stock, the selected paper weight, and the orientation needed to protect the punched edge during feeding. Consult the printer specifications for supported sizes and weights, then test a small quantity through the intended tray. Keep the punched edge aligned consistently so holes do not catch on guides or feed rollers. Duplex printing may flip or rotate the sheet, so confirm the second side appears in the correct orientation before processing a full job. Avoid paper settings that curl the sheet excessively because curl can make collating and binding harder. Pre-punched stock can shorten production time, but the print path still needs to handle the sheet reliably without damaging the holes.

Comb pre-punched stock is useful when documents are produced repeatedly and the punching step creates a bottleneck. It can be printed, collated, and loaded onto a nineteen-ring comb without processing every sheet through a punch. This is particularly helpful for longer documents that would otherwise require many punching lifts. The machine still needs a comb opener even when its punch is not used, and the comb diameter must suit the completed stack. Suitable comb binding machines provide the opening mechanism and can also handle covers or occasional custom sheets. Confirm whether the binding edge is 11 or 17 inches because standard comb supplies are commonly designed for an 11-inch edge. Longer edges may require specialized punching and spine arrangements.
