The better choice depends on the shape of the load, how often items are removed, and whether the cart crosses thresholds or uneven flooring. A raised lip can reduce sliding, but it may interfere with equipment that is nearly as wide as the shelf. Measure the usable area inside any raised border rather than relying on the cart’s overall dimensions. For open containers, paper, tools, or loose accessories, a tub style shelf can provide useful containment. For printers, projectors, or cases with broad feet, a flat surface may provide a better fit. Non slip liners or secured bins can improve control when the shelf design alone is not enough.

The top surface should place frequently used equipment at a comfortable working height without blocking visibility or creating an unstable load. Measure the tallest item intended for the lower shelf and include space for ventilation, cable bends, lids, and easy removal. Fixed shelves require more careful planning because the clearance cannot be altered later. The handle position also matters if it adds to the overall width or affects access to equipment. For presentation equipment, presentation stations and AV carts may provide purpose built work surfaces, storage, or equipment positioning. Confirm doorway height, elevator space, and storage clearance as well. A cart that fits the equipment but cannot move through the intended route will not serve the workflow reliably.

Use the manufacturer’s rated capacity for the entire cart and keep the planned load comfortably within that limit. Include the weight of equipment, supplies, bins, and any accessories attached later. Weight should be spread evenly, with heavier items on the lower shelf to improve stability. Caster size affects how smoothly the cart crosses carpet transitions, small gaps, and thresholds. Larger wheels often move more easily over uneven surfaces, while compact casters may suit smooth floors and tight storage areas. At least two locking casters are helpful when the cart must remain still during use, but the exact braking arrangement varies. Consider how often the cart will move, the condition of the route, and whether sharp turns are common. A test of the intended path can reveal clearance or flooring issues before purchase.

Power features are useful when equipment must operate on the cart or remain connected while moving between work areas. Confirm the number and placement of outlets, cord length, plug type, and whether the electrical assembly has the required safety listing for the intended setting. Cable openings or wraps can keep cords away from wheels and reduce snagging, but they must suit the equipment connections. If power is not needed, a simpler cart may be lighter, less costly, and easier to maintain. Many audio visual utility carts include different shelf, electrical, and storage arrangements, so the selected configuration should match the actual devices rather than adding features that will not be used. Leave enough ventilation around powered equipment and avoid coiling excess cable near heat producing components.
