A dual purpose setup is useful when you need to size the outside of the board and create angled window openings with the same base. Straight cuts trim the board to its finished dimensions, while bevel cuts expose the colored or white core around the artwork. Having both functions reduces the need to move large boards between separate tools and can improve alignment during multi step work. Confirm whether the required cutting heads are included or sold separately, whether compatible replacement blades for mat cutters are readily available, and whether changes can be made without disturbing measurement stops. Some workspaces already have a dependable straight cutter, so a dedicated bevel unit may be sufficient. The decision should follow the materials, volume, and cut types used most often rather than the number of included attachments.

A handheld tool is useful for detailed work, occasional bevel cuts, small corrections, and projects that do not justify setting up the full machine. Handheld mat cutters can follow a compatible straightedge and reach areas that are awkward on a long base. They are also practical for portable framing work or for producing one off openings away from the main cutting station. A handheld cutter still requires a stable guide, a protective cutting surface, and careful blade depth control. It should not replace a production unit when many identical mats are required, because repeat stops and a fixed squaring system provide better consistency. Use the handheld tool where flexibility matters and the larger cutter where speed and repeat accuracy matter.
