Confirm that the chosen thickness can be punched by your equipment and that any coating is suitable for the intended binding method. A cover intended for frequent use should protect the sheets without making the document unnecessarily rigid or difficult to open.

Cover thickness should provide enough protection without exceeding the punch or binding capacity of your equipment. A 5 mil clear cover remains flexible and works well when moderate protection is enough, while thicker plastic creates a firmer front or back. Paper covers are often described by stock weight rather than mil thickness, so the two measurements should not be treated as equivalent. Consider the document’s use, storage, and handling. A report used once may need only light protection, while a manual handled daily benefits from greater durability. Always include both covers when sizing the comb, coil, wire, or strip because they add to the total spine thickness.

Punched covers save time when the hole pattern exactly matches the paper and binding element. The hole shape, spacing, count, and edge position must all agree with the machine being used. A cover punched for plastic comb binding will not work correctly with wire, coil, or VeloBind equipment. Unpunched covers offer more flexibility when one cover style will be used across several binding methods or when the punch margin needs to be adjusted. They also allow the operator to punch the cover with the same machine setting used for the interior sheets. Heavy plastic should usually be punched separately and within the machine’s rated cover capacity. Make one sample using the final paper and binding element before preparing a larger quantity.

A window cover is useful when the title, recipient name, project code, or other printed detail needs to remain visible while the rest of the document receives protection. 8.5 x 11 binding covers with windows are sized for standard letter sheets, but the printed information must align with the opening. Produce a plain-paper mockup before printing the full run, and allow for movement created by the binding margin. A solid front is better when the design should remain private, when artwork fills the entire sheet, or when the title position varies between documents. Also consider whether the exposed area may be marked during handling. The choice should support both presentation and practical use.
