Adhesive Pockets

They can be, as long as the surface and placement are right. Adhesive pockets are made to attach to flat surfaces and hold visible documents, cards, CDs, or small items. For binders and folders, place the pocket away from the spine, fold lines, ring hardware, and edges that get rubbed by hands. Smooth covers usually hold better than rough, textured, dusty, or curved surfaces. A permanent adhesive is better when the pocket must stay in place through daily use. For binder work, use adhesive pockets for ring binders and confirm pocket size, opening direction, and vinyl thickness. Test one piece first before applying pockets to a full batch.

Media pockets need enough room for the disc and enough closure support to keep it from sliding out. Check pocket size, flap style, opening direction, adhesive type, and whether the pocket is built for CDs, DVDs, memory cards, or older media. Review adhesive pockets for media sizes when the insert is media rather than paper. Also think about the surface. A pocket attached to a binder, folder, or mailer should have a smooth, clean area so the adhesive bonds evenly.

Treat most adhesive pockets as permanent unless the product details clearly say otherwise. Many clear vinyl pockets use a strong self-adhesive backing, and trying to move one after placement can damage the pocket, the printed surface, or both. Before removing the liner, mark the placement lightly or use a guide so every pocket lands straight. If the surface is coated, textured, leather-like, painted, or already printed, test one pocket in a hidden area first. Pressure also matters. Firm, even pressure helps the adhesive bond to a clean, flat surface. If pockets will hold inserts that change often, choose a size with enough clearance so the insert can be removed without pulling on the adhesive.

Opening direction should match the way the item will be handled. Top-loading pockets work well when the binder, folder, or display sits upright and the insert drops in from above. Side-loading pockets can be better for business cards, small labels, or covers where the top edge is close to a seam or hardware. For frequently changed forms, choose an opening that gives fingers enough room to grip the insert without bending it. For shipping, storage, or mobile kits, consider whether the insert could slide out during movement. Pocket thickness also matters. A 6-gauge pocket may work for lighter card use, while thicker vinyl can feel sturdier for repeated handling.
