Card Holders and Badge Holders

An open-face holder allows quick access to the card and is useful when credentials must be removed, swiped, or inspected regularly. An enclosed holder provides more protection from scratches, dirt, bending, and accidental loss. Consider whether the card contains a magnetic stripe, barcode, smart chip, or proximity technology because the holder must allow the required scanning method. In dusty, wet, or active environments, greater coverage may be beneficial. The card should remain secure without being so tight that removal damages the edges. Testing the holder with the actual credential is the most reliable way to confirm fit and usability.

A retractable reel works well when users repeatedly present a badge to access readers while keeping it attached to their clothing. The cord should reach the reader comfortably from its attachment position without excessive stretching. A strap or no-twist fitting can connect the holder to the reel, depending on whether the card needs to remain facing forward. Badge reels are practical for staff who move through secured doors or scan credentials throughout the day. A clip or lanyard may be more suitable when the credential mainly needs to remain visible rather than extended.

Many contactless cards can be read while they remain inside a compatible holder, but the reading distance depends on the access system, card technology, holder material, and whether other cards are stored nearby. Avoid stacking multiple contactless credentials together because the reader may detect the wrong card or fail to read either one. Metal components or shielding materials can also affect performance. Test the card in the intended holder at every access point before issuing holders to a full team. When the credential must be removed for use, select a holder that allows controlled removal without bending the card or damaging its edges.

A lanyard is useful when credentials must stay visible at chest level, when clothing lacks a secure attachment point, or when temporary badges are issued at events and visitor areas. Clips and reels are often preferred for uniforms, belts, or pockets because they keep the credential closer to the body. Consider workplace safety rules, particularly near moving equipment where hanging accessories may create a snag risk. Breakaway features may be required in some settings. Lanyards provide several carrying formats, but the final choice should suit the credential weight, visibility requirement, and daily work environment.
