Gloss can increase color depth and contrast, making photographs and promotional graphics appear more vivid. It can also reflect overhead lighting, which may reduce visibility in bright spaces. Matte limits glare and is often easier to view from several angles, though colors may appear more subdued. Consider the display environment rather than choosing only by appearance on a sample. Trade-show lighting, shop windows, presentation rooms, and photographed displays can all behave differently. Fingerprints and handling marks may also be more noticeable on some gloss surfaces. Print and mount a small proof when finish quality is important, especially when the graphic contains dark areas or fine text.

The laminator must accept both the board thickness and the full board width. Standard document pouch laminators are generally not designed for rigid mounting boards. Confirm the machine’s mounting gap, heat range, speed control, and recommended board construction. Support tables may be necessary for larger pieces so the board stays level through the rollers. Heat-activated boards also require settings suitable for the adhesive and laminate, while pressure-sensitive products follow a different process. The available roll laminators for laminating and mounting include equipment intended for thicker materials, but each model’s capacity must be verified before use.

Gator board is useful when greater rigidity, resistance to bowing, and improved durability are needed. It suits displays that will be transported, reused, mounted upright, or exposed to frequent handling. Standard foam board is lighter and may be sufficient for temporary indoor signs, prototypes, or displays supported by a frame. The stronger board is not always necessary, particularly when weight or easy cutting is the main concern. Consider the display duration, finished size, mounting method, transport, and environment. A small sign used once may not need the same construction as a large trade-show graphic expected to remain flat over repeated events.

Keep the board flat and fully supported before, during, and after lamination. Clean the work surface so grit does not mark the laminate or board face. Allow the finished piece to cool or settle according to the adhesive instructions before stacking it. Separate completed boards with clean interleaving material and protect corners during transport. Large graphics should be carried by two people when flexing could damage the surface or weaken the bond. For jobs that do not require an integrated pouch construction, mounting boards provide additional substrates that can be paired with suitable adhesives or laminating processes.
