Measure the complete stack, including covers and inserts, then select a wire diameter that allows pages to turn freely without leaving the document loose. Sheet-count guidance can be useful, but paper weight, tabs, laminated pages, and covers affect the final thickness. An undersized wire may prevent pages from turning or closing properly, while an oversized wire can look untidy and allow excessive movement. Bind one complete sample before producing a large quantity. Keep the approved wire size with the job instructions when the same document is produced repeatedly.

Punching and closing are separate steps in wire binding. Some machines include both functions, while modular punches may require a separate closer. The closer must support the wire sizes used and should apply even pressure across the full binding edge. Available wire closers can support dedicated production setups or machines without an integrated closing station. Incorrect closer settings can flatten the wire unevenly, leave the seam too open, or restrict page movement. Test the adjustment with the actual wire diameter before completing the full document run.

The wire seam is usually placed between the back cover and the final page so it remains less visible when the document is closed. To achieve this, the back cover may be placed on top of the front cover before inserting the wire, then rotated into its final position after closing. The exact process depends on the machine and workflow. The seam should close evenly without overlapping or leaving a large gap. Producing one sample allows operators to confirm page order, cover orientation, and seam placement before processing the remaining documents.

Consider punch capacity, pitch, closing range, document size, and the number of jobs completed during a normal session. Manual equipment may suit occasional reports, while electric punching and dedicated closing can improve output for repeated work.
