Use the machine manufacturer, full model number, blade position, and original part number whenever available. Grapha finishing equipment may use several knives in one cutting assembly, including top, bottom, left, right, front, or side blades. Two blades for the same machine can look similar while having different dimensions, mounting holes, bevels, or cutting positions. Blades made for guillotine paper cutters demonstrate why equipment type and model matching are more reliable than selecting by length alone. Read the machine identification plate and inspect the equipment manual or existing blade markings. If the old knife can be removed safely, record its overall length, width, thickness, hole count, hole spacing, and bevel orientation before placing the order.

Standard inlay blades are suitable for many routine paper-cutting applications and may offer a lower initial cost. High-speed-steel blades contain a harder cutting edge that generally holds its sharpness longer, particularly in frequent-production environments or when processing abrasive stock. The harder material does not remove the need for correct setup, because poor clamp pressure, damaged cutting sticks, or incorrect knife depth can shorten the life of either type. The right choice depends on cutting volume, stock composition, sharpening access, and the cost of equipment downtime. A facility processing ordinary paper occasionally may not gain enough from the longer edge life to justify the additional cost, while a busy bindery may benefit from fewer blade changes and longer intervals between sharpening.

Yes. Some equipment may be identified using Grapha, Muller Martini, or combined naming, and a blade description may mention several related model numbers. Brand association alone does not establish fit. The full model designation, machine generation, blade location, and part number must still match. Muller Martini replacement blades can be relevant when the machine carries Muller Martini identification or when the specified knife is listed for equipment associated with both names. Confirm whether the required part is a top knife, bottom knife, side knife, or a particular left or right position. Small differences in hole placement or bevel direction can prevent installation even when the blade length appears correct.

Signs of a dull or damaged blade include rough edges, incomplete cuts, increased cutting pressure, paper pulling, uneven stacks, or a visible nick that repeats at the same position. A blade that is merely dull may be professionally sharpened if enough usable material remains and the knife is otherwise undamaged. Replacement becomes necessary when the blade has reached its minimum safe height, has deep chips, is warped, or cannot be restored within the manufacturer’s tolerances. Inspect the cutting stick and clamp system at the same time because a worn stick or poor clamping can imitate blade problems. Keep a spare sharpened knife available when the cutter supports critical production, allowing the machine to return to service while the removed blade is being sharpened.

The cutting stick should be inspected whenever a blade is changed. Deep grooves, uneven wear, or repeated cuts in the same channel can prevent the knife from completing a clean cut through the bottom sheets. A worn stick can also damage a newly sharpened edge or lead operators to set the knife too deeply. Suitable paper cutter cutting sticks must match the cutter’s model, dimensions, and material requirements. Some sticks can be rotated to expose an unused cutting surface before replacement is needed. After fitting the knife and stick, the cutting depth should be adjusted according to the equipment instructions rather than lowered excessively. Proper setup allows the blade to cut the stock without driving unnecessarily far into the stick.
