Creasing is often beneficial for coated, digitally printed, laminated, or heavier stock because folding alone can crack toner or distort the surface along the fold line. A crease compresses the material in a controlled channel, allowing it to fold more cleanly. Whether it is required depends on stock weight, grain direction, coating, toner coverage, and the finished appearance expected. Run several printed samples rather than relying only on the paper’s stated weight. A combination creaser-folder can reduce handling when most jobs need both processes, while an independent folder may be suitable if creasing is already completed by another machine. Also confirm the supported stock range for both functions, since a machine’s maximum folding thickness may differ from its maximum creasing capacity.

Common needs include half folds, letter folds, accordion folds, gate folds, double-parallel folds, and custom programmed positions. The correct set depends on the products being produced, such as brochures, direct-mail pieces, menus, instruction sheets, or folded inserts. High-volume paper folders are generally selected for repeatability, throughput, and faster job setup rather than simply having more fold names. Confirm the minimum and maximum sheet dimensions for each intended fold, because some formats require additional sheet length or a particular folding sequence. Also note whether unusual jobs need manual programming, multiple passes, or a separate knife-folding section. Saving repeat jobs in memory can be valuable when the same formats are produced regularly.

Heavier stock requires more force and may need creasing before folding. Grain direction also affects flexibility: paper usually folds more cleanly parallel to the grain and is more likely to crack when folded against it. Coatings and heavy toner coverage can increase this risk. The stated paper-weight range provides a useful limit, but two stocks with the same weight can behave differently because of thickness, coating, moisture, and fiber structure. Test the actual printed material under normal production conditions. Feed consistency also matters, since curled or static-charged sheets can cause doubles and misfeeds. If a job must fold against the grain, adjust the crease depth or folding setup rather than forcing the stock through settings developed for lighter uncoated paper.

Accessories depend on how the folder will be fed, operated, and connected to other finishing equipment. A production setup may need additional feeding equipment, conveyors, stands, delivery trays, crease or perforation tools, and replacement wear parts. The available paper folder accessories should be matched to the exact machine rather than selected by brand alone. Consider how finished pieces will leave the machine and whether they need to be stacked, counted, banded, or transferred to another process. Electrical supply, compressed air requirements, and floor space should also be confirmed before installation. Planning the entire path from printed stack to finished output prevents the folder from processing material faster than operators can load, unload, or move it.
