A more powerful press is not automatically the right fit for a small operation, while a basic hand press may become inefficient when used continuously. Confirm the machine’s mounting, air, and electrical needs before ordering.

The die must match the grommet’s stated size, construction, material, barrel style, and setting method. Numbered sizes alone may not provide enough information because fasteners with a similar opening can have different profiles or washer designs. The tooling must also fit the exact press. Do not assume a die intended for a metal grommet will work with a plastic fastener. Incorrect tooling can split, flatten, loosen, or unevenly set the grommet.

Choose the opening size according to the cord, hook, cable, or other fitting that must pass through it. Then consider the strength and thickness of the material around the hole. Smaller grommets can suit tags and light hanging work, while larger openings may be needed for rope or heavier mounting hardware. Edge distance and spacing are just as important as diameter. A large fastener installed too close to an edge may weaken the material rather than reinforce it. Test the intended material, fastener, and mounting hardware together before completing a large batch, especially when the finished piece will be under outdoor or repeated tension.

Confirm the exact opening size, barrel length, fastener material, finish, washer requirement, die compatibility, and package quantity. The grommets used with one press or die may not suit another system even when the stated diameter appears similar. Consider whether the project will be used indoors or outdoors and whether both sides of the finished installation will remain visible. Material thickness also matters because a barrel that is too short may not set securely, while one that is too long may collapse unevenly.
