The slot should remain fully within the bonded area rather than cutting through the printed card. Proper spacing improves moisture resistance, reduces edge separation, and helps the card hang evenly.

A 5 mil pouch provides moderate protection and retains some flexibility, which may suit short events or cards that will be replaced frequently. A 7 mil pouch adds more structure for repeated handling. A 10 mil pouch creates a firmer card for reusable credentials, access cards, staff badges, and other items that need to resist bending. When a clip-based setup is preferred, badge holders with clips may offer another way to carry printed credentials without placing all the pulling force on a laminated slot. Confirm that the laminator can process the selected thickness. The best choice balances durability, comfort, machine compatibility, attachment method, and the expected service life of the card.

It is possible with a suitable slot punch, but a factory-slotted pouch is usually safer when the final position and orientation are already known. Punching too close to the insert or sealed edge can weaken the laminate, expose the printed card, or cause the pouch to split under pressure. A separate punch also requires consistent alignment across every card in a batch. Pre-slotted pouches keep the opening in a repeatable position and allow the laminate to seal around it during processing. An ordinary pouch may still be useful when the card will remain loose, sit inside a holder, or use an attachment system that does not require a slot. Base the decision on the final carrying method before producing the printed inserts.

The laminator must support the selected pouch thickness and provide even heat across small-format pieces. Adjustable temperature can be helpful when switching between 5 mil, 7 mil, and 10 mil pouches. Consistent rollers reduce bubbles, cloudy sections, and weak seals near the slot. Some machines recommend a carrier for small pouches to keep them straight and prevent adhesive from reaching the rollers. An ID badge pouch laminator may suit repeated card production because it is designed for smaller identification formats. Feed each pouch sealed edge first and allow it to cool on a flat surface. Testing one finished card confirms the slot remains clear and the laminate seals properly around the opening.
