Choose a cutting length that handles the longest edge of your normal stock in one controlled pass. Repositioning a large poster, foam board, or plastic sheet halfway through a cut can create a visible step or change in alignment. Measure the full sheet sizes used in your shop and allow working room for squaring, clamping, and supporting the material on both sides. Longer cutters are useful for wide graphics, but they also require a stable surface and more storage space. For smaller work, a compact length may be easier to control and quicker to set up. The most practical size handles routine jobs comfortably while leaving enough room to guide the material without twisting, lifting, or leaning over the cutting path.

A specialty cutter is appropriate when the finished shape or material demands a controlled action that a general blade cannot provide reliably. Foam board grooves, circles, bevels, acrylic scoring, and shaped craft work each place different demands on the blade and guide. Blade depth should be set only far enough to pass cleanly through the material. Excessive depth creates more drag, can widen the cut, and may damage the surface beneath the stock. Too little depth leaves fibres or sections uncut and encourages repeated passes that do not follow the same line. Material support is equally important, especially with long sheets and flexible graphics. Keep the stock flat, square, and fully supported so its weight does not pull it away from the guide. A suitable backing surface protects the work area and allows the blade to finish the cut cleanly. Stable support, correct depth, and steady pressure usually produce a straighter edge than pressing harder or moving faster.

Record the cutter model and required blade reference for every tool in use, especially when several systems share the same workspace. Similar looking blades can have different shapes, mounting points, or cutting purposes. Keep separate labelled storage for each blade type and remove damaged or dull blades before they affect finished work. A blade should be changed when cuts begin to fray, require extra pressure, or wander from the guide.
