Choose thickness according to how the finished card will be handled and displayed. A 5mil pouch provides useful protection while keeping some flexibility. A 7mil pouch creates a firmer result for cards that will be handled regularly. A 10mil pouch produces a more rigid finish for long-term display or repeated use, provided the laminator supports that thickness. The printed card and both sides of the pouch contribute to the final feel, so a heavy insert inside a thick pouch can become quite rigid. Confirm the laminator’s maximum capacity before ordering. Also consider the attachment hardware because a stiff card may hang differently from a flexible one. One sample should be laminated, cooled, and tested with the intended clip or cord before the full quantity is produced.

Choose slot position according to how the memorial card should hang. A short-side slot normally supports a portrait orientation, while a long-side slot is more suitable when the card needs to hang in landscape format. Confirm the position of names, photographs, borders, and important text before selecting the slot direction. The slot and attachment hardware should not cover the design or place unnecessary stress near a printed edge. When orientation is still being decided, broader laminating pouches can help separate size and thickness decisions from the attachment requirement. Print and cut one sample card, place it inside an unsealed pouch, and hold it from the slot area to confirm the final direction before lamination.

The slot itself does not usually require a special machine, but the laminator must support the pouch dimensions and selected thickness. Small pouches can shift more easily than larger sheets, so careful alignment is important. Place the card evenly inside the pouch and feed the factory-sealed edge first. When the equipment instructions call for a carrier, use one to keep the pouch flat and protect the rollers. Select the temperature or thickness setting that matches the pouch. Feeding the open edge first can allow adhesive to enter the machine or cause the layers to separate. After lamination, place the card on a flat surface and allow it to cool before pulling on the slot or attaching hardware.

Post-lamination punching can make sense when the same unslotted pouch is used for several orientations or when the slot position needs to follow a custom design. It also allows the operator to inspect the finished card before deciding where the attachment should sit. However, the punch must be suitable for the completed thickness and positioned far enough from the edge to avoid weakening the seal. Pre-slotted pouches are usually more consistent for repeated work because the attachment point is already placed. When custom positioning is necessary, slot punches provide equipment designed for cards, badges, tags, and similar materials. Test the punch on one finished sample to confirm that it cuts cleanly without cracking or separating the laminate.
