The foil should cover the complete printed design while avoiding unnecessary waste. A narrow roll works well for names, borders, small logos, and short text areas, while wider rolls suit certificates, covers, invitations, and larger graphics. Measure the widest foiled area rather than the full sheet unless the artwork extends across the document. Leave a small margin so slight feeding movement does not expose the toner. Roll width must also fit the applicator or laminator being used. When several designs are produced regularly, keeping more than one width can reduce foil consumption. Store partially used rolls carefully so their edges remain clean, straight, and free from creases.

A pouch laminator may support toner-reactive foil when it provides enough heat, pressure, and consistent feeding, but not every model is suitable. The machine must accept the document thickness and foil carrier being used. Temperature should be adjustable or appropriate for the foil instructions, and the rollers must apply even pressure across the design. A carrier or folded cover sheet may be required to keep the foil aligned and protect the machine. Foiling pouch laminators are designed for heat-reactive foil finishing and provide the temperature and pressure control needed for compatible toner-based applications. Test one sheet first because paper coatings, toner, machine speed, and temperature can change the finished result.

Incomplete coverage is often caused by weak toner density, incorrect temperature, uneven pressure, unsuitable paper, or movement during feeding. Fine lines and large solid areas may need different artwork preparation because broad toner coverage can reveal small printing inconsistencies. Make sure the printed sheet is clean and completely dry before positioning the foil. Place the reactive side against the toner and keep it flat while it enters the machine. When the foil does not transfer, adjust only one factor at a time, such as temperature or feed direction. Repeatedly raising the heat without identifying the cause can curl paper, damage coatings, or create unwanted foil marks outside the intended design.

Keep foil rolls in their original packaging or a clean protective sleeve, away from dust, moisture, direct sunlight, and high temperatures. Store rolls horizontally or in a supported holder so the edges do not become crushed. Fingerprints, scratches, and wrinkles can transfer into the finished design, so handle the foil by its edges whenever possible. Do not place heavy items on partially used rolls. Label each roll with its colour, width, finish, core size, and application type because similar-looking foils may require different settings or equipment. For example, matte metallic laminating foil should be clearly identified when stored alongside other metallic finishes so operators can select the correct roll for each job.
