A foam board sled acts as a rigid carrier that supports large or flexible material as it feeds through the laminator's rollers. Poster-size laminating pouches in particular benefit from a sled because a full-size pouch is difficult to feed straight without some rigid backing to keep it flat at entry. Without a sled, oversized items can skew, catch on the roller gap, or buckle mid-feed — producing wrinkled or unevenly bonded results. The sled doesn't bond to the material; it simply guides it through cleanly, then gets reused for the next sheet. If your work regularly involves laminating large-format prints or oversized items, a sled is worth keeping as a standard part of your setup.

The built-in curved finger guard is the main difference — it sits above the blade path and protects fingers while still allowing full ruler contact with the material. For cutting laminated signage, posters, or wide-format film where long, straight cuts are common, a standard straight edge leaves your guiding fingers exposed to the blade. For trade show graphics, retail displays, or interior banners where load is moderate and weather isn't a factor, plastic grommets are a faster-setting alternative. For outdoor signage that will see sustained tension, UV exposure, or moisture, metal grommets are the more durable choice since plastic can degrade faster under extended outdoor conditions.

A squeegee is purpose-built for pressing adhesive graphics, window clings, and pressure-sensitive films onto smooth surfaces without trapping air bubbles or lifting the material at the edges. It gives even, controlled pressure across the application area — something that pressing by hand can't replicate consistently, especially on larger pieces. Beyond vinyl, squeegees are useful for any scenario where a laminated or adhesive piece needs to adhere cleanly to glass, foam board, or another smooth substrate without surface distortion.
