Use the stated finished dimensions for each detachable piece, then confirm them with a sample after printing and separation. Do not assume that the full sheet size or artwork grid gives the exact finished measurement. Perforation width, margins, and small production tolerances can affect how the piece fits a button maker, holder, rack, or mailing format. Build the artwork from the correct template and keep important text, logos, and borders away from the tear line. If the finished piece will be laminated, folded, mounted, or inserted into another item, include those added dimensions in the test. Producing one complete sample before a long print run helps reveal alignment errors that may not be obvious while the pieces remain attached to the sheet.

Use the printer setting that most closely matches the stock weight and finish, and confirm that the machine accepts the sheet dimensions. Heavier or perforated material may feed more reliably through a bypass or manual tray because it provides a straighter paper path. Keep the sheets dry and flat, and do not overload the tray. Standard perforated office papers may suit routine forms, while thicker specialty formats can require slower feeding and different settings. Print a small quantity first and examine registration on every detachable section. If the image shifts, adjust the template or printer alignment rather than moving individual design elements without a measured reference.

Heavier specialty stock is preferable when the finished piece must hold its shape, withstand frequent handling, or function as a display component rather than an ordinary form. Bookmarks, button inserts, literature holders, and similar items may benefit from added stiffness, but the printer and finishing equipment must support the material. Thicker stock can require a straighter feed path and may not fold as easily as office paper. It can also create more bulk when pieces are packed or mailed. Select the lightest stock that performs properly in the final use, then test printing, separation, handling, and any subsequent lamination or mounting. A heavier material should solve a practical need rather than being chosen solely because it feels more substantial.

The perforation pattern must match the artwork because each tear line defines the usable area of the finished piece. Use a template for the exact sheet layout, including margins, gaps, tab areas, and the number of pieces per sheet. Keep text and important graphics inside a safe area so normal registration movement does not place them across a perforation. Different specialty perforation papers can have very different shapes even when the overall sheet size is the same. Print alignment marks on a test sheet when permitted, separate every piece, and inspect the edges. Save the final template with the stock name and layout details so future operators do not use a visually similar but incompatible file.
