Confirm the paper size, hole shape, orientation, and binding edge before printing. Pre-punched stock can support consistent alignment, but the printer must handle the sheets without damaging or catching the punched edge. The wire diameter must still suit the full document thickness after covers and inserts are added. When the operation also needs equipment for closing the finished spine, wire binding machines show the machine types built around these two common pitch systems.

The printing direction matters because the punched edge must emerge in the correct position for binding and should pass through the printer without catching or skewing. Duplex jobs add another risk because front and back orientation can reverse unexpectedly when the sheet is loaded differently. Use a small marked sample to confirm the top edge, binding edge, first side, second side, and finished reading direction. Also inspect whether the holes remain clean after printing and whether toner reaches too close to the punched margin. Save the proven tray and driver settings for recurring work. A short orientation test prevents an entire batch from being printed upside down, on the wrong side, or with the punch pattern placed opposite the intended binding edge.

Coil compatibility affects the paper choice at the punch pattern. The paper, machine, and coil must use the same pitch, and the hole shape should suit the system being used. Common coil patterns can differ in holes per inch, so colour and sheet dimensions alone are not enough to confirm a match. Measure the finished stack to choose coil diameter, including covers, dividers, and heavier inserts. The punched margin should also leave enough paper around the holes for the expected handling level. If the operation is selecting or replacing equipment, coil binding machines provide the relevant machine formats, but the pitch must be confirmed before ordering paper or coils in quantity.
