Pre-Punched Paper by Thickness

Heavier paper increases the thickness of each sheet, so the same number of sheets requires a larger binding element than a document made with lighter stock. This can affect comb, wire, coil, and VeloBind capacity, as well as mailing weight and storage space. Do not size the spine using sheet count alone when changing from 20lb to 28lb or 32lb paper. Build a complete sample that includes covers, tabs, inserts, and any folded sheets, then measure the assembled stack using the sizing method recommended for the binding system. Heavier paper may feel more substantial and resist show-through, but it can make long manuals bulky. Select the weight first, then choose the binding element according to the actual finished thickness.

For duplex printing, use a weight that provides enough opacity for text and graphics on both sides without exceeding the printer’s supported media range. Standard 20lb stock may be adequate for text-heavy documents, while 24lb pre-punched paper often gives a firmer feel and reduces show-through. The selected sheets must still match the printer and binding system. Confirm the printer’s paper-weight setting, tray limits, duplex path, and recommended feed direction. Print a small two-sided sample with the darkest normal content, then inspect registration, curl, toner or ink adhesion, and visibility from the reverse side. This test provides a better basis for selection than choosing the weight from appearance alone.

Use 28lb paper when the document needs a more substantial feel, improved opacity, or added durability without moving to the heaviest option. It can suit proposals, presentation materials, training manuals, and documents that are handled repeatedly. The available 28lb pre-punched paper should be matched to the required hole pattern and sheet size before printing. Remember that heavier stock increases spine size, package weight, and storage space. It may also require a different printer tray or media setting. Produce one fully bound sample using the normal covers and tabs, then assess sheet turning, document thickness, print quality, and ease of handling. Choose 20lb when lower bulk and economical high-volume production matter more than added stiffness.

Paper weight can change how sheets feed, duplex, stack, and exit the printer or copier. Heavier stock may require a manual or bypass tray, a heavier-media setting, or a straighter paper path. Loading too many sheets can increase skewing or misfeeds, particularly when the paper already contains holes near one edge. Keep the stock flat and dry, and load it so the punched edge follows the recommended feed orientation. Test several sheets before running a large job and inspect whether holes catch, sheets curl, or toner rubs. Record the successful tray, setting, and orientation for each approved weight so future operators can repeat the setup consistently without unnecessary trial and error.
