The board should be flat, clean, dry, and suitable for the intended display environment. Foam core offers a lightweight option for presentations and temporary signs, while denser boards may provide more rigidity for long term displays. Smooth surfaces usually support more even contact than heavily textured or dusty materials. Board thickness also affects cutting, framing, and transport after the print is mounted. The range of mounting boards can help match weight, rigidity, surface type, and finished size to the adhesive sheet and the way the display will be handled.

Removing the entire liner immediately can make alignment difficult because the full adhesive surface becomes active at once. For larger pieces, exposing a small section first can provide more control while the print is positioned and smoothed gradually. Work from one edge toward the other using even pressure to reduce trapped air and wrinkles. The exact method depends on the adhesive construction and the size of the job, so follow the product instructions. Once a permanent adhesive makes full contact, repositioning may not be possible. Preparing a clean work surface and confirming alignment before application reduces the risk of wasting the print or sheet.

A clean cutting surface, straightedge, sharp trimming tool, application roller, squeegee, and suitable release paper can make manual work more controlled. The chosen tool should apply even pressure without scratching or stretching the print. Larger sheets may also benefit from an alignment guide or a second person to support the material during placement. Keep blades clean because adhesive residue can drag across edges and cause rough cuts. Mounting accessories and supplies can support positioning, smoothing, trimming, and handling when projects are applied without a dedicated production laminator.
