Lightweight items with smooth surfaces may only need a thinner bag, especially when the package will remain in storage. Heavier products, metal components, tools, or items with pointed corners usually need stronger material to reduce punctures and seam strain. Repeated opening also places more wear on the zipper and film, so reusable packaging often benefits from a heavier construction. Avoid choosing thickness based only on price, because a bag that fails during packing or transport can create more waste and replacement cost. Consider how often the bag will be handled, whether it will be stacked, and whether the contents could press against the sides during storage or shipment.

A stand-up design is useful when the package needs to remain upright for filling, storage, display, or access to the contents. The expanded base provides more room for products that do not sit naturally inside a flat format, including loose parts, samples, snacks, craft materials, and small retail goods. Flat resealable bags remain practical for documents, thin components, and items stored in drawers or bins. When upright presentation and easier filling are important, stand-up bags can provide a more stable format. Consider the filled dimensions rather than the empty dimensions, since the base and sides change shape as contents are added. The seal should still close cleanly without product material becoming trapped in the zipper.

Sensitive items may require tamper resistance, restricted access, moisture control, static protection, or a printed warning in addition to a basic zipper closure. The bag material must also suit the product and its expected storage conditions. A resealable zipper can make access convenient, but it does not automatically provide child resistance, tamper evidence, or protection against every environmental condition. Food, electronic components, medical items, and chemicals can have different packaging requirements, so confirm the applicable handling and compliance needs before ordering. It is also important to consider whether the bag will be used only for internal organisation or provided to the final customer, as customer-facing packaging may require clearer labelling, warnings, and stronger closure controls.

A standard zipper bag should not be treated as child resistant unless it is specifically designed and certified for that purpose. Child-resistant packaging should be considered when the contents could cause harm if opened by a child or when applicable rules require a tested protective closure. Child-safe bags use closure formats intended to provide more controlled access while still allowing appropriate adult use. The packaging decision should account for the contents, applicable regulations, labelling, and how the package will be stored after purchase. Child resistance does not replace safe storage, so potentially harmful items should still be kept secured and out of reach.
