Blade construction should reflect the materials being cut, daily production volume, sharpening schedule, and cost of downtime. Standard steel may suit lighter or less frequent work, while higher-wear materials can be worthwhile for regular production environments. However, the longest-lasting material is not automatically the best choice for every machine or job. The blade must still match the cutter’s specifications and be sharpened correctly. Consider the types of paper, coated stock, synthetic material, adhesives, and other substrates processed because abrasive or contaminated materials can shorten edge life. Estimate the value of longer service intervals against the purchase and sharpening cost. Keep cutting records when blade life varies significantly, as the cause may be material choice, cutting-stick condition, excessive stack height, or incorrect machine adjustment.
