Choose the slot position according to how the finished item will hang. A slot on the short side is generally suitable for portrait-oriented badges, passes, and identification cards. A long-side slot supports a landscape orientation and may work better for wider name badges, labels, or cards with horizontal layouts. The slot location should keep the printed information upright when attached to a lanyard, clip, strap, or badge reel. Before ordering a full quantity, create a paper sample in the intended orientation and mark the attachment point. The printed insert should not cover the slot or interfere with the sealed area around it. Most thermal slotted pouches work in a standard pouch laminator that supports their width and thickness. The slot itself does not require a special heating process. Small badge pouches can feed unevenly in a wide machine, so a carrier may be recommended to keep them straight and prevent adhesive from contacting the rollers. Feed the pouch with the factory-sealed edge first unless the machine instructions state otherwise. Never feed the slotted edge first merely because it will become the top of the badge. Allow the finished pouch to cool flat before attaching a clip or lanyard, since pulling on the slot while the laminate is still warm may weaken it.

Post-lamination slot punching may be suitable when a school already owns standard pouches, needs an unusual slot position, or produces several badge layouts from the same pouch size. The finished laminate must leave enough clear border for the slot to pass through sealed film without cutting into the paper insert. Placing the slot too close to an edge can weaken the badge, while cutting into the document can break the moisture-resistant seal. A dedicated slot punch should create a clean opening sized for the selected clips, lanyards, or badge reels. Test the position and hardware before punching an entire batch.
